BOMA San Diego | Monthly Bulletin
JUNE 2016
Lynn Hulbert
BOMA San Diego President
President's Message

Programs and Seminars organized a great lunch in May. I received a lot of positive feedback about the panel discussion together with some great improvement ideas for next time. As Property Management and Service Provider professionals, we have so much in common and it is always inspiring to see collaboration and the sharing of ideas and experiences. Thank you to everyone that "volunteered" to be on the panel.
June brings school holidays and vacations. As busy professionals it is sometimes a challenge to balance business and family, but it is always important to find time for those precious moments. I am looking forward to the BOMA San Diego Annual Summer Golf Tournament later this month and hope to see you there.  After the golf, we are off to DC to represent San Diego at the 2016 BOMA International Conference and Expo, presented by BOMA International and BUILDINGS. There are always great takeaways from the seminars, exhibits and meetings with other BOMA Chapters and this is sure to be a great event.
If you are traveling over the summer, please be safe.  Looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

May Luncheon Recap
During BOMA San Diego’s luncheon in May, a panel of experts, consisting of senior level property management professionals and service providers, came together to share their personal experiences and offer advice on how to deal with real life situations faced in commercial real estate.  The roundtable discussion, moderated by BOMA San Diego President Lynn Hulbert, touched on a variety of topics, including the importance of building relationships, keeping open communication, remembering who you work for, maintaining realistic views in emergency situations, being honest about needs and ability to deliver, being fair to and properly qualifying your vendors, and managing overall expectations of your team and clients.

This Season's Foundations Course
BOMA San Diego is in the midst of wrapping up this season's session of the Foundations course. When asked about her experience being a Foundations student, Myrandia Ingraham from Emmes Real Estate said "BOMA Foundations has helped me better understand all aspects of property management.  As a result, I am a more knowledgeable and valuable member of my property management team. One of the best aspects of this course is that each module is instructed by experts in each field. I would strongly encourage anyone pursuing a career in property management to take the BOMA Foundations Course."

Government Affairs Committee: May Roundup
Mayor Kevin Falconer recently released his proposed budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, and staff presented it to the BOMA Government Affairs Committee this month. The $3.3 billion budget is balanced, maintains enhanced reserve levels for the general and risk management funds, restores and enhances core services, and continues the Mayor’s focus on investing in neighborhood infrastructure.

Exciting New Education Program!

Today’s competitive job market demands CRE industry professionals be knowledgeable about comprehensive sustainability and energy-efficient programs. To meet this demand, BOMI International has developed a new and dynamic High Performance Program. The program is comprised of (3) courses. The Sustainable Building Principles course is being offered this year by BOMA San Diego and is scheduled for July 21 through July 23.

Pizza, Beer, Wine, Golf.. Sign Me Up!

The BOMA Emerging Leaders Committee planned a clever event this month at the Sorrento Valley Golf Center. The event took place at their driving range on a Wednesday evening and attendees were treated to a free golf swing analysis and some pointers from a Pro Golfer! I have to admit that my initial draw to this event had everything to do with the fact that the Dang Brothers Pizza 1974 Vintage Fire Engine Food Truck would be serving up wood fired pizzas. If you haven’t heard of them, they are worth seeking out! My second draw to the event was the golf instruction and swing analysis provided by Brian Bobbitt, a British Professional Golf Instructor. Given that the event was only $10, this was a steal of a deal!

Rebate Maximization: Tips for LED Lighting Upgrades
The high cost of an LED lighting upgrade is quite the pain point for many and can only be eliminated by the energy efficiency rebates provided by the local utility company – SDG&E. The lighting rebate process is no simple task and is considered to be both an art and a science. As a building owner or property manager, the number one consideration comes down to identifying how to leverage and maximize existing rebates when performing an LED lighting upgrade. This guide will serve as a framework for making decisions and a summary of SDG&E’s lighting rebates as they relate to your projects.
