Advocate for Food Insecurity
Isamar Rodriguez ‘20 is a proud alum and Latina professional currently serving the Goodwin Community in so many ways. Her journey at Goodwin started as an employee at the Welcome Center on campus, where she served as the main information resource for campus visitors and students. From this position she grew within the University, getting promoted as the Office Coordinator in the Student Affairs office. Then following her desire to help students, she secured her current position at Goodwin as the Community and Educational Service-Learning Coordinator. At the same time, she earned a Master's in Organizational Leadership from Goodwin University, graduating in 2020.
While working closely with students, Isamar quickly realized the needs of our student population and knew she wanted to help in any way possible. In her current role, Isamar oversees the Ann B. Clark Co-op. The effort that started as a food pantry run by faculty and staff volunteers has grown to be so much more. In the past year, the Co-op has expanded to help more people with more than just food insecurity, servicing Goodwin University and Goodwin Magnet School students and their families.

Robby the Cryptozoologist, on the trail of the Great New England Sea Serpent

Hunt for Cryptids
For hundreds of years, people have been reporting a mysterious sight in the waters of Long Island Sound. Reports of an enormous sea creature seem to indicate the presence of some undiscovered life form inhabiting the estuary, New England’s own Loch Ness Monster. Is it just a hoax or a mirage? Or could it be an aquatic reptile left over from the age of the dinosaurs? Or possibly a new, undocumented species?
Goodwin graduate Robby Cvejanovich (BS in Environmental Studies, 2020) has been on the trail of the creature known as the Great New England Sea Serpent, having made several expeditions around Long Island Sound to search for evidence of this elusive cryptid. As the host of his own YouTube channel, Robby (the Cryptozoologist), Cvejanovich has embarked on expeditions in pursuit of Bigfoot and the Jersey Devil, and he has scrutinized sightings of the Loch Ness Monster.

Life Calling - Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In 1999, a domestic violence survivor dialed a crisis line for help. Now she works with the operator who answered.
It was just after dawn on Jan. 4, 1999, when Marlene Harris packed up her three children and drove to an East Hartford Stop & Shop, where she picked up a pay phone and dialed 211. Her husband didn't allow her to use their phone at home.
On the other end of the line was Maria Mojica, then a crisis line operator with the Hartford-based nonprofit Interval House for victims of domestic violence. More than 20 years later, Harris can still remember Mojica's voice as she connected the young mother with their safe house services, where she and her children lived for six weeks as they slowly started to rebuild their lives.
Now, both women work side by side at Interval House, helping victims of domestic violence develop safety plans to escape their own abusers and start over, just like Harris did.
