How important is the home-field advantage? Statistically, it is supposed to be very valuable. But it doesn’t always hold up. In some sports series, the road or away team wins every game.
When the Aramaeans lost a battle to the Israelites, they decided it was because they had fought the battle in the hills. The leaders reassured their king, “If we fight on the plains we will defeat them. Their God is a God of the hills, but not of the valleys.” Then a prophet came to the King of Israel and promised him victory because the Aramaean king thought God was only in the hills.
What exactly is God’s home field? Is it limited to a particular topography? We know that Jerusalem is located in the hill country. The Psalmist wrote in 125:2 “As the hills surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore.” The New Testament especially reveals how the gospel promises life, not just land.
God is no provincial power, nor is he a district deity. He reigns everywhere he goes, because the heavens and the earth belong to him. God is not limited to any land or locality. The whole earth is full of his glory. We need never fear that God can accomplish his purposes right where we are. God is with us right now. Are we consciously with God?
