Bridgeport City News | Bill Finch, Mayor
August 22, 2014

Mayor Bill Finch speaks during a ceremony held at City Hall on Thursday evening.
Six veteran firefighters were promoted and a class of nine new fire recruits were sworn in by Mayor Bill Finch Thursday evening at the City Hall chambers.
“Today is a good day for the city,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “It is a day when hard work is rewarded and a day when a new recruits begin careers dedicated to keeping the families of Bridgeport safe. You are the people who stay vigilant so the families of Bridgeport can sleep soundly.”
The event marked the further diversification of the Bridgeport Fire Department as two of the veteran firefighters who were promoted to Lieutenant were African-American.
One was Assistant Chief Harold Clarke, the nephew of George Clarke, the first African American firefighter in the Bridgeport Fire Department. He retired in 1968 as a lieutenant with 30 years on the job.
The recruits will spend 15 weeks at Connecticut Fire Academy.

"Officials Celebrate Topping Off of Black Rock School Addition"– CT Post (blog)
Mayor Bill Finch, Interim Superintendent of Schools Frances Rabinowtiz, State Representatives Ezequiel Santiago and Auden Grogins, and City Council member Susan Brannelly pose for a photo following the topping off ceremony at Black Rock School on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Mayor Bill Finch, Interim Superintendent of Schools Frances Rabinowtiz, City Council members, State Legislators, community members and tradespeople gathered for a Topping Off ceremony to celebrate the construction of the highest structural element for the new addition to Black Rock School.
At Black Rock School, the 18,000 square-foot addition includes 10 new classrooms, a multipurpose room that can serve as a gymnasium and assembly space, elevator access to all floors to make it ADA compliant, two new playground structures and a new entrance area on School Street. The addition was designed by Newman Associates, and the construction was managed by Bismark Construction and Premier Construction Mac LLC. The cost of this addition is $8.8 million, and eighty percent of that is covered by the state.
Since Mayor Finch took office, kids in every single neighborhood across the city have benefitted from school facility upgrades that he’s championed. And, once Mayor Finch’s school construction projects are complete – including the renovation at Black Rock School – more than half of Bridgeport’s 20,000 students will be attending new or newly renovated schools.
