Who is Jesus Christ to you?
Who is Jesus Christ to you?

Colossians 1:15-18
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

New International Version (NIV)
"Who is Jesus Christ to you?" A good friend of mine asked his friend that question. His friend, who moved here from New York explained, "In my hometown, many people believe in God, but if you say you believe in Jesus Christ, people treat you like you think you have an imaginary friend. In our day, many do not believe in Jesus as an historic person, despite overwhelming evidence that he lived. Many others who dabble in religion attempt to redefine who God and Jesus are by saying, "I believe in a God who..."

The ancient city of Colosse had many who wanted to define Jesus as just one in a series of aeons who emanated from God. In their view, Jesus was not really God, but perhaps he had come from God. In his letter Paul explains who Jesus is in unequivocal terms. Jesus is God. Jesus is the Creator who created us for himself. Jesus is the head of the church. Jesus was the fullness of God who came to make peace through his blood on the cross."

Who is Jesus Christ to you? My friends came to worship one Sunday morning right after their discussion about Jesus. There one of our pastors preached and started by asking, "Who is Jesus Christ to you?" In a stirring sermon, Joshua Barrett explained who Jesus is. Not long afterward our wonderful friend from New York asked Jesus to walk with her and to make herself real in a frightening moment in a storm. Jesus came through. He always does. She believes in him. Do you?
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, we confess that sometimes we try to remake you into our own image. We like to think that you are the kind of God who always agrees with us. We imagine that you love what we love and hate those whom we hate. Except, you don't. So today, like so many before us, we acknowledge that you alone are God. Forgive us of our sins through the blood of Jesus. Make us your very own. Show us what it means to follow you. Teach us to trust you and to obey all that you have commanded. Make us your disciples we pray. In Jesus' name. Amen.
