A Message for Blue Jay Families
Hello Blue Jay Families! I know these past few weeks have been unpredictable for you, your student, families, friends and colleagues.
All of us have had to make quick life decisions for something that wasn’t planned. However, it’s been impressive to witness how the world is supporting each other through acts of kindness and dedicating their services to ensure that we stay safe and healthy. Please continue to be proactive and positive as we continue to navigate through this change and transition together. Thank you so much for your patience, thoughtfulness, dedication and love to your student, and to the University. Lastly, it's easy to forget to take care of yourself, so please practice self-care.
Best, Kesha Williams Director of Parent and Family Services

Remote Learning
While JHU courses are being held at a distance, our commitment to each student’s success remains a top priority. With the recent decision to implement online coursework for the remainder of the semester, the services within Hopkins remain available to students in an online format. With the transition to online, rather than face-to-face, academic support, new procedures are in development to ensure students’ ease of access. The JHU educational community is working hard to transition face-to-face courses to remote access quickly so it is important for your student to be patient with their instructors who may be new to teaching online. Being a successful student in an online classroom requires time management and a willingness to engage in new ways. Click below for a few tips that can help your student succeed as a student learning remotely.

The Census and COVID-19: What you need to know
Census season is here! This is probably the first Census where your student is responsible for counting themselves and we want to ensure that you and your student have all the information you need to complete this important process accurately.
U.S. Census data is used to determine funding for a variety of public programs including hospitals, roads, public utilities, and housing. During your student’s time at Hopkins, they use these critical local resources. Even though many students might move away after they graduate, they have to be counted while they live here. Ten years ago, the students who completed the Census at Hopkins paved the way to ensure your student is counted and has adequate resources–now it’s time for them to do the same for students on college campuses for the next 10 years.
We have been talking to your students about counting themselves in Baltimore, however, with the onset of COVID-19, and the recent campus disruptions, we want to be clear: The U.S. Census Bureau is proceeding as if students are still at their campus (either on- or off-campus) residences, NOT at whatever residence they've relocated to because of these closures. The reason for this is that under normal circumstances, their campus community is where they would be living and sleeping most of the time.

Maryland Senate approves nominees to JHU police accountability board
On Feb. 28, Maryland senators approved the nominations of 13 community members, students, faculty, and staff from East Baltimore, Homewood, and Peabody to the Johns Hopkins University Police Accountability Board, which will help directly shape the development and operation of the future Johns Hopkins Police Department. Two additional appointments will be made by Baltimore's mayor and the Baltimore City Council president for a total of 15 accountability board members. Non-student accountability board members will serve for two years, while student members will serve for one year and must be enrolled for the duration of their term.
