Week of November 17, 2014
When it comes to our students, growing strong hearts is as important as growing strong minds. In this season of Thanksgiving, as we gather as family to share in the bounty, our students in all grades are working hard to ensure that others in our community have food on their tables.

Our seventh grade values class spent a community outreach day this past week volunteering with Meals on Wheels, bringing food to the elderly and housebound and learning about the vital mission of this organization. This is our tenth year of service with Meals on Wheels, and thanks to our wonderful parent drivers, our students were able to deliver 80 meals to those in need. One meal recipient was an 88 year old, housebound retired teacher. She was so touched by the conversation she had with our students that she gave them all big hugs. She also shared that those hugs meant the most to her on that particular day. Proof that small acts of service and kindness can make a big impact.

We are pleased to share that our Middle Schoolers logged 743 hours of personal community service this past quarter and summer. And our 7th graders will be back at Meals on Wheels in the spring for another outreach day in our greater Richmond community.

This week, food drives will be taking place in both our Lower School and Upper School. We hope you will take a moment to read the details below and support these student drives with your food donations.

Additional outreach projects are planned for December for all of our students, leading up to a larger spring outreach initiative. We look forward to sharing the details with you in the coming weeks as we strive to build a culture of service.
 Important Announcements:
Lower School Food Drive: Each year, our Lower School collects non-perishable food items to be donated to the St. Michael’s Church Food Pantry.  Students are encouraged to bring in items any day this week or Monday/Tuesday of next week. Each Lower School student will present one item during our Thanksgiving chapel service Tuesday, November 25. Thank you for your support.
Middle School Food DriveOur Middle Schoolers will be collecting food to donate to FeedMore, Central Virginia's hunger relief organization  encompassing the Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and the Community Kitchen.  FeedMore serves local children, the elderly and families struggling to provide for themselves in our area. Click here for more info on foods that are needed. The collection will take place November 12-21. Thank you for your kindness and willingness to help.
Three Cheers for the SMBA! Hope all of our teams had a great first practice. Rosters and schedules have been distributed to participants. Please contact Wally Kern with any questions. The first SMBA games will take place on Saturday, December 6th.

Chess Anyone? Registration is underway for the winter session of our popular after school chess program with Championship Chess. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving. All of our K-5 students, both beginners and experienced, are invited to participate. The registration deadline is November 25. The session starts December 3rd. Click here for further details and the registration form.

Say Cheese! This Thursday and Friday, 11/20-21, we will be taking professional photos at random of our classrooms and School community for new School communications materials. We will try our best to be as unobtrusive as possible during the process. While we want the students dressed as they would for a normal school day, we would be most appreciative if students could come dressed on the nicer side of normal dress. Thank you for helping us put our best foot forward!

Go Fish!
A Tuna Fish that can't carry a tune? A Star Fish that can't get an acting job? A seven-legged Octopus? A Zebra Fish with spots? A Tiger Shark who wants to be friends with everyone? There was a commotion in the ocean on Friday as Mrs. Mitchell's first grade class presented their "Go Fish" musical play. We had oceans of fun watching a Tiger Shark and his unique collection of friends discover how their differences make them each special.
Special thanks to Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Tickle and all of the parents who helped with costumes, scenery and more.  Applause, applause!
