Meteorological Spring has Arrived!

Josh keeps hoping mud season hasn't really started yet, and he's sure we will get at least one more miserable winter storm. But in the past few weeks he's been making a lot of happy yellow glass, so we think he subconsciously knows March 1st is the start of "Meteorological Spring" and doesn't want to admit it.

Desert New Mexico Bowls

Desert New Mexico glass is true dichroic glass: in reflected light (when seen against a dark background) the pattern has blue highlights, but it appears yellow when light is transmitted through the glass. Quite a pretty trick!

Desert Tumblers

The liquid in these tumblers is Coca-Cola because we don't hardly never imbibe while at work, but red wine would have the same transforming effect: gorgeous blue!

What the heck is "Meteorological Spring" anyway?

Although the sun's path across the sky determines when seasons officially change, meteorologists confirm something we already suspect; seasons actually seem to start about three weeks before their date on the calendar. Here's why: in the Northern Hemisphere, the coldest months of the year are usually December 1 through the end of February. (We all know that winter doesn't really start four days before Christmas!) The hottest months are typically from the beginning of June through the end of August. So meteorological spring - March 1 through May 31 - is the 3-month transition between the coldest and warmest months of the year. Here in Shelburne, this week also marks the beginning of mud season!
