Psalm 121:5-6
The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

New International Version (NIV)
               I first encountered the classic romantic song, “Someone to watch over me,” in the movie Mr. Holland’s Opus.  We all need someone to watch over us.  When we were young, our parents kept a watchful eye.  As we waited with our mom before she went home to the Lord, one brother breathed a prayer, “Watch over . . .”  We wanted God to watch over his beautiful gift who had watched over us.
                The Psalmist has experienced God’s gracious kindness in watching over him.  He testifies to God’s constant care.  God is already watching over us.  As the shade at our right hand, he protects us from harm.  Have you ever had a moonburn?  We don’t think of the moon harming us, but in the ancient world, the moon was blamed for all kinds of illnesses.  Friends tell me that nights with a full moon bring more people into the emergency room.
                Unfortunately I had my share of sunburns as a kid.  The sun’s rays can cause immediate and long-term problems.  But God is greater than the sun!  One day my family and I were talking about heaven.  One asked, “Will it be bright?”  I said, “Yes because God will be the light, we won’t need the sun.”  “But what if I want the sun and God?” came the question.  God will be all the light that we need, with no harmful sunburn!  Already the light of his presence shines through us as he watches over us.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your protection.  You watch over the ways of the righteous.  Watch over us today and keep us from harm.  Keep us from harming others as well.  Be our light and show us your perfect way.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
