“Who is the main character?” When we read books, we look quickly to discover all we can about the people in the story. Four people told Jesus’ story in our New Testament. When you read John, what do you see and hear? Isn’t it different? Almost immediately we realize that John sees Jesus through a little different lens than Matthew, Mark and Luke. True, they are looking at different facets of the same diamond.
John knew Jesus as well as any other human being. A former fisherman, and feisty son of thunder, John became the beloved disciple, so loved that he learned to love. From my middle school days I have loved this book. I especially love John’s view of Jesus. Who is Jesus to John? He is the Word made flesh, the life-giving, light-shining, Lamb of God who loves people.
Who is Jesus to you? John and Andrew wanted to spend time with him. John the Baptist couldn’t stop talking about him. Simon had his name and his whole life changed by Jesus. Nathanael met him and surrendered his prejudice about Nazareth. John wrote this book like the resurrection had already happened, because it actually had. Like the people we see in this story, if we ever come to know this Jesus, we will never be the same again. Over the next four weeks let’s learn together about the main character in the great drama of the ages: Jesus.
