She Gave Birth to her Firstborn Son
Luke 2:1-7. Seven short verses with an eternal impact. It can be easy to quickly read over this passage without much thought, especially if it is one you’ve read since the start of your faith journey. But it is a real story, not folklore, with real people. Mary, a teenager, traveling with her fiancé, Joseph. She was at the end of her pregnancy, and they were headed to Bethlehem where they would have no family, no support system.
But, God.
God had orchestrated this event and told us about it several hundred years prior (Micah 5:2). A baby was to be born in the City of David. Not in a palace with the whole world watching, but in a manger. There was no room for him. There were no doctors. There wasn’t a crowd awaiting his arrival.
Mary delivered her first born son, wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger. I can just imagine the emotions that she felt as she brought Jesus into the world. It had been a long, hard journey since Mary first heard that she was pregnant. And her first born son was finally here.
Jesus came into this world not like a king, but like a servant. He was laid in a manger because “there was no guest room available for them.” (Luke 2:7)
How often do we leave Jesus out because there’s just no room for Him in our lives?
Think of some ways that you and your family can make room for Jesus this Advent season. Pray that God would give you the desire to do so.
