Tallowood Times | Remember Tallowood Tomorrow

Dear Community of Joy "The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy." How is your summer going? Ours is going well. We have two missions teams serving as I write. Our Sonlight choir is serving and leading in Birmingham, England. Please pray for this team of 80+ students and volunteers. Our eighth graders are also on mission with a World Changers trip to Pittsburg, Texas. Pray for them as they serve in that community. Pictures and updates are available on the Tallowood and the Tallowood Students Facebook pages.

Allow me also to update you on the implementation of our 2020 report. Ann Bradshaw convened our 2020 Steering Committee last week and asked me to share the progress we are seeing on the 2020 recommendations. The Making Disciples initiative energizes us as we welcome Tim LaFleur from Brainerd Baptist Church to lead our Discipleship Group training on August 22. We plan then to launch a number of discipleship groups for the purpose of proliferating disciple makers who make disciple makers at Tallowood. Already a number of staff members are leading small discipleship groups. I am facilitating a group of promising young servants of God on Tuesday mornings.

Also, God has brought a wonderful infusion of new members from Nepal, the Congo and South Africa. We celebrate God's bountiful provision to his church at Tallowood. At camp our students related to each other in amazing ways. God is raising up leaders among our students from around the world. This is only the beginning of what God will do as we grow in our heart for the nations that Christ came to redeem.

Likewise, the work of reaching the next generation is taking place. Young single adults and young married couples are finding a home at Tallowood. Our Single Adult Ministry is vibrant, reaching greater and greater numbers of young single adults. There is momentum among our students right now. The opening of our new building, The Point will facilitate further outreach and in reach with our students. We hope to hire new interns to help us with one on one interaction with our students in the new school year. One of our members was away for a year and noted that Tallowood is reaching a much younger demographic. Like the Apostle Paul, we want to become all things to all men so that we may win some!

Many have commented on the higher visibility of our Missions Ministry. Perhaps you have noticed the announcement of current missions projects before the offertory prayer. Our goal is that every member will be prepared for a missions encounter each time they worship. Likewise, our missions minutes have been effectively used. A new Worship in Action work is helping us with refugee ministry right here in Houston. Many are being saved and baptized. We glorify God for his work through Tallowood as we become increasingly missional in our focus. Let's see ourselves on a short-term mission trip each time we leave our homes, as we go to our offices and interact with our neighbors.

Our Building Committee, in agreement with the 2020 report is proposing the development of a campus master plan to facilitate Tallowood's numerical and spiritual growth in the years to come. We will focus on Kingdom Resources to implement all of these ministries. Our Personnel Committee and staff are processing the need for a staff member to facilitate internal and external communications. There is much more work to be done in the area of communications.

Please pray for our Personnel and Finance Committees as we continue to process the personnel implications of the 2020 report. Our new committee will facilitate communications between the original committee and the standing committees of our church. We remember that the plan is a seven year plan, but already God is working in powerful ways through the work of the 50 faithful servants who led our seven committees of 2020. Chris Tomlin wrote, "Greater things are yet to come, greater things are still to be done in this city." May God make it so!

In His Hope,

Duane

Women's Ministry Consultant to begin this summer

Kelly King, Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma consultant for women's ministry has agreed to work with our women's ministry leadership for a period of three months. This arrangement was approved by the personnel committee in order to strengthen our organizational leaders in training and planning functions. She will begin in July, making two trips to Tallowood monthly. Kelly will be engaging our women in preparation for church programming for the fall and spring 2015. She has served as women's ministry director of a large church in the Oklahoma City suburb of Bethany at the Council Road Baptist Church. She has been a consultant for women for several years in denominational service.

M & M (Music & Missions)

Good Things that Come from Wednesday Night for Kids at Tallowood

- Improved performance in school
- Development of social skills
- Enhanced self-esteem
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, a closer connection to God:
    - Music helps us to feel close to God, to be quiet and listen for God's voice, to be able to talk with God and pray
    - Participating in missions helps us feel close to God, to be a part of helping others know him

Sign up begins August 17. Join Music & Missions beginning September 3.
Buy low. Give high.
Double your tax advantages.

If you are considering a gift to Tallowood Baptist Church, look first to a gift of stock. If your stocks have appreciated in value, you can make a substantial gift for a relatively small expenditure--the original cost of the stock.

It's tax smart. You may deduct the entire market value of stock held long term, and you are not subject to any capital gains tax on the appreciation.

It's simple. A gift of stock requires minimal effort and provides maximum rewards--for you and for those whose lives are touched by your gift. For more information, please contact Betsy Samu, 713.468.8241, ext. 8159.
