Featured Primary Source

“Howard physician on his rounds in Memphis” is an illustration depicting the Yellow Fever outbreak that struck Memphis in the 1870s. This primary source is useful for examining the living conditions of newly freed men in Memphis as well as the epidemic. Formed during the 1850s by a British physician, the Howard Association was a group of young men that assisted in aid, managed nurses and doctors, and helped organize burials.

This source meets the 5.26 and 8.90 Tennessee social studies standards.
