With Ontario’s 2026 municipal election approaching, new analysis from AMO provides a snapshot of the candidates, acclamations, gender representation and voting methods shaping this year’s municipal elections.
Approximately 6,663 candidates are competing for 2,800 elected positions, a slight increase over 2022. These numbers provide an early look at participation and representation ahead of the October 26 elections.

Strengthen Emergency Preparedness: Apply now for Community Emergency Preparedness Grant (CEPG)!
The Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response (MEPR) has launched the 2026-2027 round of the CEPG, helping strengthen local emergency preparedness and response capacity across Ontario. Municipalities with populations under 100,000 residents (Statistics Canada 2021 Census data), not previously funded, are eligible. Applications close October 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. EST.
