"Working on this project has been incredibly rewarding," said Zachary Lopes, South Shore YMCA member, volunteer, and Eagle Scout. "The Y has always been a special place for me, and I wanted to give back in a meaningful way."
Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a significant milestone, as it is the highest rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program of Scouting America. Only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank, with over 2.7 million total youth achieving this honor.
Zach, a Boston College High School student, approached the South Shore Y in early 2023 with a vision for his Eagle Scout project. He wanted to develop a fitness trail connecting the Emilson YMCA branch in Hanover to our SSYMCA Early Learning Center, Gymnastics Center, and Family Farm site through the wooded path that extends between both properties. This ambitious project required meticulous planning, from design to fundraising for materials to the actual construction. Our team was impressed with Zach's detailed project plan and approved it from concept to construction.
Zach's history with the Y played a significant role in his decision to give back through this robust project. From a young age, Zach and his family were active members of the Emilson Y in Hanover. He spent several summers as a camper at the SSYMCA Nature Center in Norwell, where he developed a love for the outdoors. Joining the Cub Scouts in fourth grade, Zach quickly achieved the "Arrow of Light" honor, a significant achievement for the young and somewhat shy boy. "Scouts has helped make me a better all-around person," Zach shared. After his time in Cub Scouts, Zach joined Hanover Scout Troop 38.
For his Eagle Scout project, Zach worked on creating five fitness stations along the new “Strength Adventure Trail." He solicited donations of materials and volunteers to help construct the stations over several months. Zach collaborated with our Health & Wellness team and Marketing Department to develop signage for each station, ensuring that Y members could easily identify and use them properly. In total, 40 volunteers contributed 320 hours to the project, with Zach himself dedicating over 200 hours. Zach's father, Josh Lopes, expressed immense pride in his son's accomplishment.
"The project really helped deepen my relationship with Zach," Josh said. "Working with him as a volunteer taught him leadership skills and the joy of building something that positively impacts the community."
Zach's journey is a testament to the power of community and the impact of giving back. His leadership and dedication have not only enhanced our facilities but also inspired others to contribute to our mission. We invite members to enjoy the Strength Adventure Trail as warmer days are ahead!
