Exodus 3:9-10
And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.  So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.
New International Version (NIV)
If you ever hear that I am trapped somewhere, it will not likely be in a cave underwater.  Because of my fear of tight spaces and my respect for water, underwater cave exploration holds little interest for me.  The reward (which escapes me) would not be worth the risk.  Remember about a year ago a boys soccer team was trapped in that very situation.  Rising water cut them off from escape as they waited in a cave.  Rescue was risky, costing one diver his life.

How is God going to get you out of your present impossible situation?  Have you ever wondered?  Israel must have wondered.  Under the auspices of Jacob’s son Joseph, God saved Jacob’s family by rescuing them from famine in the promised land.  There they multiplied and became numerous.  We hear an ominous tone in the narrative when we realize that  a new Pharaoh arises who did not know Joseph.

So often when God wants to do something greater than we can ask or imagine, he begins with a baby.  Moses was born under a death sentence from the Pharaoh.  So God made a way for his life to be saved and for Pharaoh’s wealth to pay Moses’ mother to raise him.  Raised in Pharaoh’s household, Moses eventually came to the rescue of an oppressed Israelite and had to run for his life.

God came to Moses in a burning bush and commissioned him to go back and deliver his people.  The once confident prince protested that he was ill-equipped.  But God told him, “I have heard.  I have seen.  I am sending you.”  Just so, when God saw our broken, fallen state, he sent a baby, soon under a death sentence who grew up to be our Savior.  He rescued us when all seemed lost by laying down his life for us.  Do not be surprised in your darkest day when God shows up.  He has a plan.  Nothing is impossible with God.

Pray with me:
Father, Way-Maker, thank you for finding a way to find us when we were lost.  We are grateful for your Son, born under a sentence of death, who came to rescue us.  Today if we hear his voice calling us closer, help us not to harden our hearts.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
