Hebrews 1:1-4
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,  but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.  The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.  So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
New International Version (NIV)
A prominent pastor claimed God had spoken to him and told him what to do.  Skeptical, a reporter asked him, “God spoke to you audibly?”  “No,” the preacher replied.  It was much louder than audible.

Going back the beginning, we know that God speaks.  He spoke and the very universe itself came into existence.  “Let there be . . .”  After creation, his voice could not be silenced.  He spoke to Adam and Eve in the garden.  Then he spoke through the prophets through the centuries.  Conscious that Jesus began the last days, the writer of Hebrews says, “But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.”  So Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.”

Jesus himself sustains all things by his powerful word.  Think of it:  at Jesus’ word the earth spins on its axis.  I wonder what he would say to us today?   The hymn captures it, “He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing . . .”  And we hear in the scriptures, “Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

In a play about Joan of Arc, one of her critics says, “She claims that God talks to her.  He never talks to me.”  Joan hears him and says, “But don’t you wish he did?”  Don’t we?  He does.  Are we listening?
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, thank you for still talking to us.  Please give us the ears of disciples.  If there is something you want to say to us, let us not miss it.  Here in the silence speak to us.  Speak, Lord, your servants are listening.  As you sustain all things by your powerful word, remember us we pray.  Sustain us and we will be sustained.  Listening in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
