| “How an East German Novelist Electrified Socialist Realism”: Siblings in the New Yorker
East German writer Brigitte Reimann and her novel Siblings, translated by Lucy Jones, are featured in the April 3 issue of the New Yorker. “In a disarmingly direct style, alive with dialogue and detail, Reimann connects the contradictions of the G.D.R. with the legacy of the Third Reich,” writes critic Joanna Biggs in the piece. “Among so many losses—a brother, a future, an ideology—Reimann’s Siblings has somehow survived, an unlikely patch of political, personal, and aesthetic freedom.”

| Grandparents and the Ghosts of Forebears in the New York Times Book Review
At the Drop of a Cat was featured in the New York Times Book Review on March 26. The French novelist Élise Fontenaille’s debut picture book—translated by Karin Snelson and Emilie Robert Wong, and “beautifully illustrated” by Violeta Lópiz—is “a young boy’s portrait of his nature-loving immigrant grandparent and their precious time together.” According to a starred review from Kirkus, the “warmhearted and affirming” picture book is “one to pick up.”
And just in time for National Poetry Month, I'm Always So Serious by Karisma Price is an Editors’ Choice pick in the New York Times Book Review. “Price is very much staking her own ground here, on Southern soil blessed and haunted by the ghosts of forebears; her book summons everyone from James Baldwin to Gwendolyn Brooks to Beyoncé,” says editor Gregory Cowles in the March 23 write-up. “I think you’ll like it.” Check out writer Stephanie Burt’s NYTBR review of the collection from the March 19 issue.
