Acts 27: 1 - 3
When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment. 2 We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us. 3 The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs.

New International Version (NIV)
Are you crazy about cruise ships? I confess I am not. Do you remember anybody you met on a trip? A wonderful friend sent Melanie and me to the Bahamas for our 10th anniversary. I know we had dinner companions but I can't remember them.

In his characteristic style, Luke recounts the beginning of Paul's journey to Rome, describing the ship's port of origin, the itinerary, and the names of travel companions. A Roman centurion named Julius was the captain in charge of Paul's safe passage. Aristarchus from Thessalonica accompanied Paul and Luke.

When the ship reached Sidon, Julius showed kindness to Paul by allowing him to disembark and spend time with friends. Even if we forget names, we will remember kindness. So we remember lunches with friends on Tallowood trips. Once our lost luggage chased us around Turkey. Friends helped us get clothes and provisions until the bags arrived. We remember.

"Kindness is my superpower" shouted a message on a t-shirt at church one day. Like Julius, we may show kindness to someone today. If we do, they will remember. So will God.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for our companions on the journey of life. Remind us of the ones who have shown us kindness. Fill our hearts with kindness toward others. We ask in the name of Jesus who has been so, so good to us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals are in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
