Hello Neighbor!

I have new additions to my family! They’re not cuddly or fuzzy. They don’t leave paw prints on the carpet. They’re certainly not children…that shipped sailed years ago! My new loves are houseplants and I’m obsessed!

Purchased at Terrain, a utopia for green thumbers, I was given explicit instructions on watering and overall care for my little babies. I water them daily from a handmade ceramic watering pitcher. I spritz them twice a day with a vintage glass plant atomizer. I’ve come close to talking to them, but I have my limits!

My intense affection for these sprouting splendors made me wonder…am I alone in this infatuation? In the 70s and 80s you would be hard pressed to find a house without plants of various sizes strategically hanging in front of windows in macramé hangers. From the 90s until now, I’ve seen nary a leaf or bud indoors, but, according to the National Gardening Association, they’re making a comeback and they’re even cool with millennials! A recent survey found that the 18 to 34 age group set a new high and now occupy 29 percent of all gardening households. Perhaps this generation views gardening as a way to be kind to Mother Nature. Perhaps they prefer houseplants to children…they’re cheaper, require less time and provide an antidote to their face-paced lives and need for instant gratification.

Whatever the case may be, plants ground us and teach patience…something all of us need, not just millennials! So, buy some greenery for indoors or outdoors. Visit a nearby garden. Take a horticultural class. Embrace your green thumb! And, here are a few houseplant care tips from Martha Stewart.
