Week of May 15, 2016
Authors, Explorers and Journalists
While summer may be drawing near, there are still many exciting learning opportunities taking place at St Michael's!
  • This week was Authors' Day in Kindergarten! A treasured St M tradition promoting early literacy, story structure and creativity, Mrs. Adams' class authored, illustrated and shared their own books on the theme of "When I Grow Up."   Ms. Somerville's class authored stories on favorite experiences and adventures. Kudos to all of our young writers!
  • Our fourth graders charted a course to travel through time!  Through their interactive "Timeline of Discovery," our students shared their learnings about the brave men and women who explored new lands, the unknown depths of the ocean and the far reaches of outer space.
From Eric the Red to Astronaut Mae Jemison, Explorers' Day not only taught social studies, but reinforced research, public speaking and presentation skills.

  • In seventh grade life science, our students are trying to determine the level of biodiversity on the Singleton Campus. Leveraging our unique 70-acre campus and marking out 9 to 14 square meter areas, students are researching the plant and animal life within their zones to average the plant and animal life that exists on campus.
  • The second edition of this year's new Middle School student newspaper, The STM Beacon, hit newsstands this week showcasing the creativity and writing skills of our student reporters. Our fourth graders are producing their own class newspapers as well!
Be sure to check out our St M Facebook page for more for photos of the week's learning adventures!
Join us for the Spring SMPA Meeting

The Spring Meeting of the St. Michael's Parents' Association will be held this Thursday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Middle School Singleton campus.

The evening will feature an ART SHOW from our Middle School students and a brief BAND PERFORMANCE from our Middle School band. A short meeting will follow, at which the Parents' Association will present a gift to the School.  The evening concludes with refreshments and an opportunity for parents to visit with each other.

This meeting also provides an opportunity to acknowledge our departing faculty--Cheryl Broga, Moses Joshua, and Anne Mikula. Hope to see you there!
Honors Assembly for K-8: May 18 Info and Dress Code

Our annual year-end Honors Assembly for grades K-8 will be held this WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. in the Church.

For this occasion, students are expected to adhere to Dress-Up Day dress code, which is found in the Directory:
  • Students must wear either: (a) a dress shirt, tie*, and long pants; (b) a dress; or (c) a dress blouse with a dress skirt/pants.
  • *Students K to 3rd grade may substitute a tucked in collared shirt for a dress shirt and tie.
The parents of those students receiving awards will be contacted prior to the ceremony.

Our guest speaker will be Laura Godwin, Class of 2006. Thank you!
Interested in Soccer at St. Michael's?

The School is exploring the level of interest families might have for a Boys' Middle School soccer team. In order to balance athletic opportunities with Girls' Field Hockey, the boys have an opportunity to field a socccer team this fall.  Any girl wishing to participate on the soccer team is welcome to play as well.

While still in the investigatory stage, a soccer program would likely be coached by parent volunteers and practiced on the Singleton Campus Field. Students would be responsible for their own personal equipment - shin guards, cleats, etc. Beginning as early as next fall, practices would be in the mid- to late-afternoon during the week depending on volunteer coaches' schedules.

Please click here to express interest. Thanks!

Note: if you have a fifth grader who would be interested in the program in the future, please submit your information as well.
Thank You Coaches!

As our Spring sports season draws to a close,
we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to all of our team coaches.

THANK YOU for your time, expertise and commitment to our student athletes! Our Spring Middle School Coaches:

-- Golf (Season Record W-7/L-2):  David Jennings, Coleman Pollard
-- Track:  Phillip Tickle
-- Girls' Lacrosse (Season Record W-2/L-6/T-2):  Katherine Martin
-- Boys' Lacrosse (Season Record W-4/L-5): Pete Waldbauer, Joe McCool, Ward Good

Special thanks to Joe McCool. Joe was instrumental in launching our Boy's lacrosse program seven years ago and he has coached each season since the start. His last son graduates this year and we are grateful for Joe's enthusiasm and support of our lacrosse program!  Thank you, Joe!

It's GRADUATION season! We want to celebrate ALL of our graduates, because whether Blue or White, once a Dragon, ALWAYS a Dragon!

During upcoming eighth grade, high school and college graduations, please share your graduation photos and next steps with us at #‎alwaysaSTMdragon. CONGRATULATIONS Class of 2016!
