Pre-Health Advising Announcements

Hello Future Health Professionals!
This time of year, many of you are gathering with family and friends to enjoy a delicious meal. As conversations flow, you might find it’s a perfect moment, as a future health professional, to gently dispel a common healthcare myth. Tryptophan in turkey does not make you sleepy!
Turkey contains about the same amount of tryptophan as other poultry, and eating it doesn’t directly trigger a rapid release of relaxing neurotransmitters. Instead, that post-meal drowsiness is mostly due to the “rest and digest” parasympathetic response your body activates after a big meal.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday and enjoy sharing a little medical nerd science along the way!
Best,
Your GW Pre-Health Advising Team

Eye Opener Session - Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry
The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) announced the Eye Opener Session (EOS) program a couple of years ago to complement our public awareness campaign, Optometry Gives Me Life, designed to build a robust, diverse and highly qualified applicant pool. EOS has been successful with nearly 1,200 students participating.
The Eye Opener Session program (eyeopenersession.org) is a matching service for potential and future optometry students who are looking for a Doctor of Optometry to shadow, via in person or virtually, to learn more about a day-in-the-life of an optometrist (OD). Communication can also be done via chat and/or email. Students will be matched with an OD based on geographical information, common interests, and goals.
