 Brebeuf Jesuit Student Journalists Attend
Conversation with
Former First Lady Michelle Obama
Student journalists Gillian Cookerly-Dietrich and Molly Conners attended this week's conversation with Michelle Obama at Banker's Life Fieldhouse.
We were able to catch up with Gillian and ask her what message or messages she took away from the experience.
Gillian's response: "There are many messages that I will take away from this inspiring event, and here are a couple of them. Everyone is smart enough and capable enough to do anything they put their minds to. You will often fail, but if you continue to persevere you will undoubtedly succeed. Once you do succeed, it is important to not become complacent and accept the ideals of others. In order to make a true change in this world, you must continue to fearlessly advocate for yourself and others and be unafraid to stand up for what is right."
A huge thank you to Central Indiana Community Foundation and Women's Fund Indy for donating tickets to our students!

Student Spotlight

EMONI DIX '18

Loves About Brebeul
I think if I had to narrow it down I would have three main things I love about Brebeuf. The first one being the schedule. It was very confusing and slightly overwhelming at first, but once you have a grasp on it you really learn to love it. The independence we have here along with the breaks allow me to get what I need done, and I think really prepares us for what is next. I love that Brebeuf’s community encourages you to get to know your teachers as a person and I think that is something that doesn't happen everywhere. You really develop a good student-teacher relationship and you know they want you to succeed. The third thing is the opportunities Brebeuf provides outside the classroom. Whether it is volunteering, service trips or exchange programs, Brebeuf offers a lot of ways to broaden your horizons, I think that is a valuable thing to have at such a young age.
Favorite Class
I really enjoyed my AP Psychology with Mr Petty. The material was very interesting and Mr Petty’s class is always a fun time. This year I am really enjoying Ms ' Biotechnology class.  It is very hands-on, and she is so knowledgeable and engaging.
Future Plans
I am not sure what university I will be attending, but I would like to continue playing softball in college if I can. Wherever I attend I will be pursuing a career as a Speech Pathologist or a Dietitian (RDN).
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Softball
Peers Against Cancer Together
Black Student Union
National Honors Society
Random Facts
I have fourteen-year old twin brothers.
I was a gymnast for ten years.
I really enjoy cooking and baking and have been doing it since I was younger.
Can we get an early scouting report on the softball team this year?
We are already working to prepare for our season. I definitely think we are continuing to improve as we have been the last couple years. I am really excited for our season to show that improvement. You should definitely come out to see a Brebeuf softball game in the spring.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
I love the shows Criminal Minds and Parks and Recreation, they are very different genres but both fantastic shows.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I definitely want to visit Rio. I think it would be very exciting to see scenery in Rio from downtown Rio, Mountains, and the beaches. I also want to visit Christ the Redeemer and the Museum of Tomorrow.
You are now in your final semester at Brebeuf Jesuit.  Has it sunk in yet?
I think sometimes you forget because you get wrapped up in the homework and school activities of your school routine, so not completely. Yet when I have those conversations with friends about our futures it seems surreal and you realize how close Graduation is. Even though it’s a little weird to think about no longer being a Brebeuf student, I am very excited about the future and being a college student.
In what way have you changed the most since your freshman year?
I am definitely a lot more outgoing.  I was a very quiet, shy freshman and I’m sure no one would describe me as shy now. Being able to drive is one of the best changes!  I definitely think I have better communication skills now. I was not very comfortable talking to people or expressing myself as a freshman. Now, I can confidently say I feel comfortable conversing with pretty much anyone. I think this change contributed to another skill that has vastly improved - leadership. I think it comes from being “older kids in school,” but I also think it developed by the many experiences I’ve had throughout high school.

Freshman Service Days for the Spring Semester

We will begin accepting permission forms next week!  Freshman Service Days are offered each year to the freshmen to help introduce them to the part of Brebeuf Jesuit's mission of being men and women for others.  it is our hope that it will start them on a path of service beginning before and going far beyond the hours which they are required to complete during their junior and senior years.  This is also a great opportunity for freshmen to get to know more of their classmates and teachers outside of the classroom.
Freshmen can participate in one or all of the Freshman Service Days as space allows.  Class absences will be excused as long as permission slips are turned in 1 week prior to the trip.
Sign up on our signupgenius.com page here.
The permission slip can be accessed here.

The Brebeuf Food Drive Has Launched!

Brebeuf Jesuit is once again holding a canned food drive during Lent, February 14-March 29, 2018.
For years, our students, faculty, staff, and families have participated in this meaningful drive supporting St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, donating enough cans of food to fill two semi-trucks! In addition, cash donations from our school community are able to buy tens of thousands of pounds of food each year.
Homeroom classrooms at Brebeuf will hold collections to once again to compete for the grand prize – a pizza party. To maximize our school’s impact, this year’s goal is for every student and staff member is to collect 20 cans each.
St. Vincent de Paul feeds roughly 3,300 families every week, or roughly 12,000 individuals, many of whom are children and the elderly. Every can is helpful!
How to Help
To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver the items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), and bring donations of support to the Main Lobby Desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.
By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis! Let’s bring in those cans to your student’s homeroom and support St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.

The application to apply for financial aid for the 2018-2019 school year is available.
Brebeuf Jesuit is committed to educating students based on their ability to learn, rather than their ability to pay.  Financial aid awards are not based on academic merit or diversity – the only factor considered is demonstrated financial need.  More than $2.4 million of aid is awarded to students and families on a financial-needs basis.
All financial aid information is treated confidentially and we request that families do not discuss their awards with others.  Awards are determined on an individual case basis by the Financial Aid Committee, which is made up of five members of Brebeuf Jesuit administration and headed by the Chief Financial Officer.
