To conserve water, Stanford Redwood City uses recycled water to flush toilets and urinals only, as required by Redwood City. The water is safe to use for intended purposes. The odor is unpleasant, and so we reached out to the city for answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.

Report on SRWC buildings assessment: On June 2nd, three specialists visited several bathrooms on the campus where odor concerns have been reported. They found little odor before flushing, but the smell increased briefly afterward, which is typical of recycled water. Stagnation in the lines can contribute to this odor. The specialists noted that higher odor reports during peak times, like lunchtime and the end of the day, may stem from multiple flushes occurring simultaneously, prolonging the smell's dissipation.
Is the water safe? The recycled water is safe for all intended uses. Redwood City uses the highest classification of recycled water intended for non-potable uses. The water produced is highly regulated with mandated reporting to multiple agencies. If it does not meet the requirements, it is not allowed to enter the system.
Is the smell of the water an indication of its cleanliness? The recycled water is treated and disinfected before entering the system (protecting it in ways similar to drinking water). However, it contains more nutrients, similar to groundwater sources, which can cause odor without affecting the quality of its intended use.
Is it possible to flush the lines more frequently and would that help with the odor? The City’s Water Maintenance Department has been performing routine flushing once every week near the campus. In addition, they are working on other strategies that should increase the quality of the recycled water in the system.
