Dear Faculty:
We have a quite a few events planned for you for this fall. We are excited to let you know that for every CFD event you attend you will have the opportunity to enter a raffle for the upcoming Lilly conference in San Diego in January (9th -11th). The conference theme this year is Teaching for Active and Engaged Learning. Please click here for more information. We will have 5 winners and you can increase your chances by attending more of our CFD events! The winners will have their conference registration and their hotel stay paid for. Also, don’t forget we are having our Grand Opening this month for the CFD! Details below.
There is a lot of buzz about AI around the university (and beyond). As such, we invite faculty to come together collaboratively and transparently to chat about AI in the CFD. We are holding some AI related conversations later this semester in the CFD (see below). We are always open to other ideas for engaging the topic of AI. If you would like to do some reading on AI there are several interesting articles on the Inside Higher Ed website.
Director of Teaching and Learning: The CFD is soliciting applications for the position of Director for Teaching and Learning. The eligibility for the position is inclusive of both tenure-track and clinical faculty. Applications are invited before September 27th, 2024. Click here for more information.
A Short Stretchy Work Break brought to you by our Director of Scholarly and Creative Practice: In our current work modes that are so computer-dependent and stationary, it is important not to forget about the body. This video guides you through a brief six-minute office stretch and tiny groove that can offer you some neck-down reconnection, a well-earned break, and a little fun. Close your office door and join Roz, our Director of Scholarly and Creative Practice for light physicality to two great songs by Tyla! The video offers both seated and standing movement. Wed. 9/18 from 4:00-5:30pm in UHall 3030: Engaging Students through Teaching Writing Students’ classroom disengagement has been described by The Chronicle of Higher Ed recently as remaining at near “record levels,” attributable to “anxiety and lack of motivation,” and as teachers we’re all seeking new ways to address our students’ overall well-being as well as their investment in, performance during, and willingness to take intellectual risks in our classes. To address these challenges, a group of Rhetorical Arts and Writing Instructors, Bryan Wisch (English), John Young (English), William McClain (English), and Townsend Scholz (Core), will present and facilitate a workshop on student-centered learning, focusing on concrete methods of engaging students in the classroom through their writing. We offer practices and approaches to their written assignments via their attitudes and their thinking, meeting students where they’re at, addressing their apprehensiveness, and actively building their recognition of, familiarity with, and comfort towards the written task at hand, promoting the value of their individual written voice on the page for their growth. RSVP by Monday 9/16

Mon 9/23 at 2:30pm & Wed 10/16 at 12:30pm: LMU Faculty Discussion on AI We've all been dealing with course policies related to AI, trying to figure out what's best for students in our disciplines. Yet, as faculty at LMU, our mission also compels us to consider the impact of Generative AI on the world beyond our classrooms. Join us for a conversation about the ethical considerations of AI. In our efforts to transform students into responsible global citizens, and in alignment with our commitment to Laudato Si, faculty are invited to discuss how academia (especially faculty at Jesuit institutions) can lead the way in transforming students to think broadly and critically about AI. In our discussion we will consider issues of copyright, bias in source material, unreliable output data, and the impact of AI on humans and our environment. Join members of various faculty committees (CET, ATC, AHRC, CTE FLC, & CIS) for a discussion centered on what we know, what we need/want to know more about, and how we want LMU to engage.
