Dear Tufts community members,
I am pleased to announce that Tufts University has selected Capstone Development Partners, LLC, a student housing and campus facilities real estate development company exclusively focused on collaborating with colleges and universities, to develop a significant new state-of-the-art residence hall for undergraduates.
We expect the new building, the largest residence hall project in the university’s history, to be ready for occupancy by the fall of 2027, achieving the goal that we share with our host communities of Medford and Somerville of significantly reducing the population of our students residing in residential neighborhoods and freeing up housing for working families in those cities. Importantly, we are committed to making sure that all eligible students will be able to be part of this new residential community regardless of their financial means.
This new energy-efficient residence hall will be located at 401 Boston Avenue next to Dowling Hall, offering easy access to on-campus facilities. Sited across from the Tufts/Medford Green Line station, the transit-oriented building will allow residents easy use of the MBTA to reach many off-campus locations. Additionally, the building’s ground floor will include mixed-use retail space, enlivening this portion of Boston Avenue with more activity and foot traffic.
As we are at the very early stages of the process, many of the project’s details have yet to be finalized, including the number of apartments, the building design and configuration, and related details. We will be working closely with Medford officials, our neighbors, and the university community to communicate the project’s progress and details as they are determined. In the meantime, you will find answers to many questions in this FAQ.
Best regards,
Michael W. Howard
