Julie Raasch was recognized with the Rising Start Award. FoodWIse program celebrated Julie due to the evidence of outstanding skills and qualities such as showcases initiative from the time of hire, demonstrating commitment to expanding access outreach and inclusion in programming, displaying passion for learning with a positive attitude, and establishing effective relationships at multiple levels.

Liliana Ramirez received the Innovative Award due to her independent drive to be adaptable and flexible, creating effective solutions to ever-changing needs, considering lessons learned from programming and perspectives of diverse audiences to develop novel solutions to complex problems, demonstrating commitment to expanding access, outreach, and inclusion in programming.

FoodWIse offered a nutrition program for five Micah Center guests at UW Green Bay STEM Food Lab. Guests were transported by van from Micah to ensure accessibility. The program kicked off with a tour of the STEM building, Extension office (where guests met our Area Extension Director), greenhouse, and learned about Extension programs. Guests made Roasted and Tomato Spinach Pasta and a side salad while learning about exploring our food history and the MyPlate. 

Fresh produce is under-consumed by most of the population. At the House of Hope shelter; families are unfamiliar with some produce. FoodWIse provided a single nutrition lesson to 6 families. The lesson topic was about Trying new foods. Participants learned new tips to pair their favorite food items with new ones, this tip will increase the chance of trying new foods. The nutrition educator provided a food demonstration using produce that is in season and participants could find in the garden shelter. During the cooking demonstration, the educator spoke about how to use the produce and store it for better taste. After the lesson participants were seemingly more willing to try new produce.

Planting for a Purpose

Have extra produce growing in your garden this summer? If so, consider donating produce to local food pantries as part of Planting for a Purpose. Planting for a Purpose is a program of Extension Brown County. This program provides an opportunity for gardeners to donate some of their produce to local food pantries.

Two-thirds of Brown County food pantry users say they would like to eat more fruits and vegetables, but name cost as the top reason they do not. To meet this need, local food pantries need for fresh produce.

Most pantries accept many types of fresh produce, but especially appreciate fruits and vegetables that are easy to store. These include green beans, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, onions, apples, corn, squash and tomatoes.

September is National Food Safety Education Month!

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration celebrate Food Safety Education by preventing foodborne illness, also known as “food poisoning.” The Federal government estimates that there are about 48 million cases of foodborne illness annually – that’s about 1 in 6 Americans each year. These illnesses result in an estimated 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths each year. Following simple food safety tips can help lower your chance of getting sick.
