Dear Friends,
Tomorrow, International Women’s Day will raise a call to action to create a better-balanced world and accelerate gender parity. We approach achieving that balance for women in science and exploration by showcasing their work through awards, lectures, expedition reports, interactive conversations and more. The more we talk about women’s contributions to scientific knowledge and advancements, the more their presence in these fields will be normalized. Our goal is to one day put ourselves out of business. Can you help us spread the word by forwarding this newsletter to at least one other person?

Happy International Women's Day!
We'll see you on the trail, at the designation and beyond.
All the best,
Yael Jekogian
Managing Director

Michele Westmorland Screens New Film
Courtesy Allison Hanes
On March 5, WINGS hosted a screening of Headhunt Revisited: With Brush, Canvas and Camera, and talkback with filmmaker Michele Westmorland at the home of Lili Lindner. This beautiful documentary film explores artist Caroline Mytinger's incredible journey through Melanesia in the 1920's and the power of art to span oceans and decades. Westmorland carried WINGS' first flag on an expedition to Melanesia during the early stages of the research and filming. You can read about the expedition here. If you missed the screening, you can purchase the film here.
Michele has donated a framed diptych that features one of her photographs and one of Caroline Mytinger's illustrated portraits that is featured on the film, which we will auction during the 2019 Women of Discovery Awards.
Meenakshi Wadhwa on her Career, Women in Science and Spending Four Months in a Wheelchair
Planetary scientist Meenakshi Wadhwa won the WINGS WorldQuest Air & Space Award in 2003. In the 16 years since then, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, became the Director of the Center for Meteorite Studies and Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration in Arizona – and survived a near-fatal car accident while on expedition in Iceland. We spoke with Meenakshi about her career, her recovery, and the challenges that still lie ahead for women in science.

What WINGS' Women of Discovery Are Up To

  • Mandë Holford, a 2019 Women of Discovery Honoree, discusses Killer Snails, the start-up she helped launch aimed at getting kids interested in science.

  • Flag Carrier Sefra Alexandra, also known as the Seed Huntress, talks about her mission to save seeds while reconnecting with nature.

  • Krithi Karanth, also a 2019 Women of Discovery Awardee, discusses how she overcame a personal tragedy that temporarily caused her to stray from her pursuit of conservation as a career. And now she is one of India's top wildlife conservationists.

  • This summer, 10 sculptures of iconic women – including Jane Goodall – will be installed in New York City.

  • On a recent episode of Science Friday, WINGS Fellow Nergis Mavalvala explains a new technology being developed to detect black hole collisions.
