COVID-19 update for families: April 3, 2020

As the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve, we know there are ongoing questions about the school closure and our plans for distance learning. We are committed to keeping you up-to-date during this time.
Governor's orders
The governor's Executive Order 20-19 is still in effect, requiring all Minnesota schools to provide distance learning to students through at least April 30. At this time, we are preparing for students to return to our school buildings on Tuesday, May 5 at the earliest.
Distance learning and picking up materials
Today, students wrapped up their first week of distance learning. We know there were some technical challenges, and we are still working with some families to access technology. Thank you for your patience and grace as our teachers and students re-established their learning connection. We will be surveying students and families in the near future so we can understand what you feel we are doing well, and what needs improving. Find your school's distance learning plan.
We will begin distributing paper learning materials to families with students in grades K-6 every other Wednesday, beginning next week, Wednesday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Watch your email for instructions you may receive from classroom teachers about receiving paper learning materials. Our plans for distributing materials may change as time goes on. If you have questions, contact your school directly.
Remember, picking up learning materials is an essential activity, and is not prohibited under the governor's stay-at-home order.
No school Friday, April 10
As previously scheduled, Friday, April 10 is not an instructional day for students.
COVID-19 and increased racism and discrimination
There has been a troubling rise in racism and discrimination towards Asian Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders in our state and country. We are all in this situation together as local community members, Minnesotans, Americans and citizens of the world. Please join us in setting an example for our students by calling out racism when you see it. All members of our community are encouraged to report hate-motivated acts to local law enforcement, the Attorney General's Office, or the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.
Meals
We continue to provide free meals to any student, regardless of their family's ability to pay. Visit the Roseville Food Map to find a site near you. Information about free meals in English, Spanish, Karen, Amharic, Somali, Hmong, Nepali and Oromo.
Child care for emergency and healthcare workers
We continue to provide child care for elementary-age children of critical workers, which includes educators providing school-age care, grocery workers, and medical and other emergency personnel. Details about child care.
Talking with students about COVID-19
The National Association of School Psychologists has published Talking to Children About COVID-19: A Parent Resource. It contains excellent information for families. This is a difficult time for students, families and staff. There are resources available if you need help.
