Brebeuf Jesuit Approved for Virtual Learning Days for Inclement Weather Option for 2015-2016

The Indiana Department of Education once again approved Brebeuf’s application for their Distance Virtual Learning Program.  The program provides a way for schools meeting the criteria to create a virtual learning environment to replace missed class time, avoiding the necessity for makeup days caused by severe weather cancellations.
During any future weather closures for Brebeuf Jesuit, if a Virtual Learning Day is warranted, families will receive instructions detailing how to access Portals individual class pages regarding the Virtual Learning Program expectations for that class day, as posted by each class instructor.
Virtual Learning Days ensure that when students return to school, the progression of learning has experienced only a minimal disruption.

Student Spotlight

SHAILI KUMAR '16
Loves about Brebeuf:
I love how Brebeuf is my second home. I am friends with tons of people in each grade, and I love how connected everyone is to each other. I am not scared to come to school or be who I am because everyone here is so accepting. I love how I can talk to my teachers about anything even if it’s not school related. Overall I love the environment here at Brebeuf because I feel safe and happy. There is never a dull moment here at school as I am learning more and more everyday!
Favorite Class:
My favorite class is Honors Biotechnology with Mrs. Annee. I enjoy science and I really like the labs that we do. They are fun and interesting, and I feel like I am a real scientist when I am in lab. Mrs. Annee is such a great teacher and a very nice woman. She makes class a lot of fun!
Future Plans:
In the future I plan on going to college and studying premed.  At this time, I am not sure which college I want to go to, but I plan to play soccer in college and going to medical school afterwards. I just hope that college is just as fun as Brebeuf.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Varsity Soccer
Member of STRAP club (last year)
Member of Tatum’s Bags of Fun club (currently)
Presidential Ambassador
Club Soccer outside of school
Varsity Basketball
Track and Field
Random Fact:
I have a freckle in my right eye but I tricked people into thinking it was a birthmark.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Yes, Brebeuf is as rigorous as they say. I have to utilize my time wisely otherwise I would struggle to make good grades. Freshman year in math I remember spending 2 + hours on homework assignments because we always had so much to do. The work isn’t getting any easier, but my time management is improving which makes everything a lot better. All of the work here is very challenging, but it is definitely doable if you put in the time and effort to complete it.
Who is your hero?
My hero is my grandfather because he is a neurologist and I plan on becoming a doctor as well. He is always there to help me with my math and science work and he is just super smart. I hope to be as smart as him when I get older.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to become a surgeon. Ever since I have started watching Grey’s Anatomy I have been motivated to pick up a scalpel and start performing surgeries. I don’t know which surgeon I want to be, but maybe an orthosurgeon.

Accommodations for Students at Brebeuf Jesuit

If you believe that your student qualifies for an accommodation (i.e. extended time, computer usage, etc.) during finals, the Academic Counseling Office and/or Learning Center must have a copy of your student’s psycho-educational evaluation on file by November 20, 2015 in order for your child to be considered for accommodations for extended time finals in December.
If you need a referral for a psychologist, please click here.  If your child already receives accommodations for finals, then you do not need to do anything more unless you want to pursue accommodations for standardized tests for college applications.  In order for accommodations to be given, each student must have a release on file with Brebeuf Jesuit. The release can be accessed by clicking here.
If a student would like to deny their accommodation rights, a written notice must be made from the student/parent to the Academic Counselor and the release form will be deleted.

Michael Sprague's Work to be Displayed in the Cordell Gallery

The Visual & Performing Arts Department and the Mothers Association welcome Michael Sprague to the Cordell Gallery (facing the Principal's Office).  Sprague produces functional ceramic work which he describes as a combination of East and West: "I use Asian forms (eastern) with crystalline glazes, which are European in origin (western). I sometimes like to incorporate wood or metallic looking elements to give a feel of antiquity.  Ultimately I try to make good work that is functional yet meditative."
Sprague’s work will be on display from December 1 through January 8 and is available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Brebeuf Jesuit.  Pieces selected as gifts can be picked up before Christmas Break.  Please contact Joe Winhusen jwinhusen@brebeuf.org for more information.

Senior Yearbook Picture Deadline is November 13

Senior students must sit for their senior yearbook picture by November 13, 2015 with Prestige Portraits. Parents and/or students are responsible for making these arrangements. Brebeuf is not informed if a student does not get a photo taken, so failure to do this means that student will not be included in the senior picture section of the Yearbook.
Families may call 317.829.2088 or go to www.PrestigeIndiana.com immediately to schedule an appointment.  These appointments fill up quickly so call TODAY if you have not. (Please Note - Personal senior photos do not need to be taken by Prestige - only the Yearbook pose).
The cost is $15.00 for the Yearbook sitting fee, and wardrobe is provided by Prestige (tuxedo top for the boys, black drape for the girls).

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend Trip 2016 - Detroit, Michigan

During Spring Break 2015, Brebeuf students went on a service trip to Detroit. The students observed the spirit of the city, a sense of hope and optimism from its citizens, where the residents continually work to make the largest city in the United States to declare bankruptcy a better place. We wish to continue that profound experience albeit in a condensed version, adding more cultural activities relevant to the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
We will be participating in a variety of service experiences and take time to explore various landmarks and places that are culturally significant to Detroit including the Charles Wright Museum.
Interested students can pick up a permission packet from Karly Geisse in room 182. The trip is limited to 10 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you have any questions or want more details, please contact Karly Geisse at kgeisse@brebeuf.org.
