After becoming the first graduate of KU School of Medicine-Wichita’s addiction medicine fellowship, Luke Rosebraugh is embarking on another first: He is the Hutchinson area’s first full-time addiction medicine specialist.

Rosebraugh, who completed the one-year fellowship in June, hopes to help expand addiction care across the region served by Hutchinson’s medical community.

Workplace wellness. Clean water supplies. Substance use disorder and a slew of other public health issues. A recipient of multiple teaching and public health honors. As a collaborator and leader, Elizabeth Ablah, Ph.D., MPH, CPH, has done much to improve the health of Kansans and communities in her two-decades-plus on the faculty at KU School of Medicine-Wichita. And all the while teaching medical students about producing and consuming research.

Josh Kennell is the second recipient of the Akakpo-Ulloa Family Neuroscience Scholarship, created by Kansas City faculty member Carol Ulloa, M.D., and her family in honor of her physician father, a neurologist and psychiatrist, and designed to foster interest in those specialties and provide exposure to multidisciplinary care.

In Kansas, 96 of the state's 105 counties are designated as mental health professional shortage areas, leaving 60% of Kansas’ children and adolescents with unmet mental health needs, including autism, neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Healthcare professionals are familiar with and equally frustrated by the gaps in care, so the KSKidsMAP conference provided an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the services available and how to access them, which will have a positive impact on their patients. 

Maggie Ziegler, M.D., now a pediatrics resident at Boston University, did rotations at University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital and Yale Children’s Hospital with the help of the Dr. David Russell Scheffer Medical Student Support Fund. 

Shortly before he died in 2024, David Scheffer, M.D., told his mother and a family friend that one way he would like to be remembered was helping fourth-year medical students go on out-of-state rotations as they explore and try to solidify their choice of specialties. They made sure that happened.

The Building Relationships and Targeting Healthy Emotions program, in collaboration with Haysville Public Schools, recently wrapped up its fourth summer. Pictured is the dedicated team of counselors who provided 29 children and families with intensive behavioral and social skills interventions for eight weeks.

The BREATHE program offers a therapeutic alternative to medication for children with symptoms of ADHD, teaching and reinforcing social skills and behavior regulation in the context of sports and recreational activities. The program, which started in 2022, has grown each year with support from the Departments of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics at KU School of Medicine-Wichita.

Edith Sigler, M.D., a KU School of Medicine-Wichita alumna, just added Illinois state fiddling champion to her list of accomplishments. 

Congratulations to Edith Sigler, M.D., who won the Illinois State Fiddle Contest this month. A KU School of Medicine-Wichita alumna, Sigler completed her preliminary year of internal medicine residency this summer in Wichita and is now a dermatology resident at SSM Health/Saint Louis University. She's also the Kansas state fiddling champion and the Kansas hammered dulcimer champion. 

Sept. 17 is the ninth annual National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, a day dedicated to honoring the memory of colleagues who have died and to continue to raise awareness and discussion on how to prevent it. The Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine, which started NPSA Day in 2018, invites people to join "The Moments That Matter" campaign.

Save the date! All KU School of Medicine alumni are invited to reconnect with classmates by attending events at either the Wichita or Kansas City campuses on Friday, Oct. 23. Events include a State of the School livestream, student panel discussions, campus tours and time to mingle with refreshments. 

Eight of the 16 residents in the KU School of Medicine-Wichita Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency in Salina welcomed babies during the past academic year. The milestone reflects the program's commitment to supporting physicians as they build both their careers and their families. Congratulations!
