Social Innovation Weekend is an exciting 48 hour event where students approach pressing social issues with entrepreneurial solutions! This year’s topic is on homelessness and affordable housing and the students will virtually attend panel discussions, guest speakers, and more while also collaborating with students from all different majors to compete in a pitch competition at the end of the event.


This event is 100% virtual which means you will be using an interactive platform that will allow you to collaborate with your team and work from anywhere!

Dedication of Residence Hall Lobbies
In the summer of 1964, hundreds of Freedom Summer Volunteers came to Oxford, OH to train to register black voters in Mississippi and to prepare to resist the violence that would faced them in the south. Three of those volunteers — James Chaney, 21, Andrew Goodman, 20, and Michael Schwerner, 24 — were murdered in Mississippi soon after leaving Oxford. In February 2021, Miami University dedicated residence hall lobbies to honor those three activists.
The Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service is proud to host two Andrew Goodman Foundation (AGF) Vote Everywhere Ambassadors, as well as a Campus Election Engagement Project (CEEP) Fellow, to continue education about voter supression and increase voter registrations.
AGF Ambassador Reena Murphy spoke at the dedication of the residence hall lobbies, emphasizing that the work of Freedom Summer is not a thing of the past. "Voter suppression and intimidation are still widely used to marginalize Black voters and Black voices today," she added. In Fall 2020, at team of students led by the AGF and CEEP registered over 300 new voters.

Redhawks Count is dedicated to civic engagement and nonpartisan action on campus and is associated with the Wilks Leadership Institute and the Andrew Goodman Foundation Ambassadors.
Redhawks Count provides opportunities to increase voter engagement, pushes for nonpartisan collaboration, and creates community projects that expand student’s understanding of their rights. We strive to unite partners in the Oxford and Miami community in order to work towards promoting civics on Miami’s campus. 

We are Hiring!

As a part of civic engagement efforts on campus, Vote Everywhere Ambassadors organize voter registration efforts, plan and facilitate civic engagement workshops, and generally work to engage students in the political process. Vote Everywhere is a nonpartisan program of the Andrew Goodman Foundation (AGF), whose aim is to bring down voting barriers and tackle important social justice issues on college campuses nationwide. Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Wilks Institute student and professional staff, including attending Wilks Staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with Wilks Supervisor.
  • Organize and lead initiatives on campus relating to voter education, registration and nonpartisan social issues activism.
  • Meet weekly as a part of the Wilks Civic Engagement Team.
  • Stay in regular communication with AGF to ensure the program is serving your leadership development.
  • Strive to increase voter engagement on campus each semester.
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings as a result of your ambassadorship (including Wilks Trainings and Andrew Goodman Foundation Trainings over the summer, dates to follow).
  • Make and effectively use campus and community connections.
