Another COE Student Ambassador Wins a Sammy Award! |
|
|
We are thrilled to share that another COE Student Ambassador, Alexis Argueta, was recently honored with the McDermett Memorial Award during the annual Sammy Awards ceremony this past week! Named in memory of Velma McDermett, former Dean of Women, the award recognizes a senior woman who has made a significant impact on student life through leadership, service, and academic excellence.
Deeply rooted in SHSU’s motto, “The measure of a life is its service,” Argueta has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving others throughout her college journey. She credits the university’s mentors, campus community, and leadership opportunities for shaping her growth and inspiring her to lead with purpose and intention.
In addition to this honor, the McDermett Memorial Award includes a lifetime membership in the SHSU Alumni Association, allowing Argueta to remain connected to the Bearkat family and continue giving back to the university that has played such a meaningful role in her journey. Congratulations Alexis!

Congratulations to Dr. Kanika Simmons! |
Congratulations to Dr. Kanika Simmons who successfully defended her dissertation on February 6, 2026. Entitled Teachers’ Perceptions of their Facilitation of Literacy Praxis in Secondary High School Intervention Classrooms, Dr. Simmons’s dissertation explored how six high school English Language Arts (ELA) intervention teachers experienced professional learning and implementation of effective literacy practices. The findings showed all participants demonstrated sophisticated reflective practice but there were systemic structures that critically underutilized this expertise, and her recommendations emphasized systemic transformation, authentic dialogue infrastructure, reformed accountability systems, and voice equity to leverage sophisticated expertise that teachers already demonstrate. Dr. Simmons’s committee was chaired by Dr. Jennifer Morrison, and committee members included Dr. Andrea Beerwinkle, Dr. Tricia Durham, Dr. Mae Lane, and Dr. Melinda Miller.

Center for Research Excellence and Innovation |
Did you attend the wonderful workshop presented by Dr. Hodges on March 23rd? She was full of passion and attendees left with a lot of knowledge about how to methodically build a survey/scale. If you were not able to attend, you are in luck because we recorded it and have posted the video on our SharePoint Page Scale Development Workshop
The CREI will offer 1-2 pre-recorded workshops yet this semester. Also, we have listened to faculty and student needs and are going to host 2-3 workshops over the summer. This will be the first time continuing workshops through the summer since the beginning of the Center! While we have some ideas on potential topics, we want to hear what might be helpful to you all. Please submit your ideas via this link! Research Development Workshop Ideas – Fill out form
