Cabinet Conversations: Sandra Brown,

The UC San Diego Staff Association and Campus Human Resources invite you to Cabinet Conversations, a series of conversations with cabinet members via Zoom. Cabinet Conversations is a series of conversations with cabinet members designed to provide staff the opportunity to get to know our campus leaders on a more personal level and hear what leaders have to say about important topics impacting our campus. As part of the Staff Association's strategic plan, these sessions have been developed per requests in the following campaigns: the UC San Diego Staff at Work survey, the Council of UC Staff Assemblies Engagement Survey, and the UC San Diego Idea Wave campaign. Our next Cabinet Conversation, scheduled for Tuesday, March 2 from 10–10:45 a.m. is with Sandra Brown, Vice Chancellor for Research and Distinguished Professor. Dr. Brown is internationally recognized for her developmentally focused alcohol and drug research. Her research yielded pioneering information on adolescent addiction, relapse among youth, and long-term outcomes of youth who have experienced alcohol and drug problems. In the Absence of Things is an experimental short film written and performed by renowned jazz-vocalist Somi in partnership with the National Black Theatre and Salon Africana. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, the work is a lyrical meditation on the profound sense of personal vacancy that a performer feels when unable to perform in front of an audience. These emotions are captured on screen with vocals from Somi’s Grammy-award winning album Holy Room—Live at Alte Oper with Frankfurt Radio Big Band, along with her own spoken narrative and visuals.

Somi reflects on her personal connection with South African singer-songwriter and activist Miriam Makeba, the first African to win a Grammy and to enjoy a global music career. Somi shares selected readings from her play “Dreaming Zenzile”, which aims to honor Makeba’s memory and to continue “undoing the silence surrounding her legacy”. The event will be accompanied with music from “Dreaming Zenzile” as well as selections from her forthcoming studio album. Remembering Mama Africa will be followed by a live Q&A.

In 2020, COVID-19 exposed the bitter, everyday reality that families face, struggling to combine work and care, and exposed the U.S.’s threadbare care infrastructure and safety nets. Roselyn Miller and Jahdziah St. Julien, from New America’s Better Life Lab will present research and stories of essential workers on the front lines, child care professionals, elder care and home health care workers, parents, and caregivers to discuss how COVID-19 has impacted their work, caregiving, and wellbeing, as well as the policies and programs that would help them survive the pandemic and thrive beyond it.
