CABINET LETTER FROM SPENCER SHIVELY

Dear De La Salle Families:
It is fitting that we conclude our first semester during the season of Advent. As we look forward to wrapping up another great academic term, the Advent themes of hope, peace, joy, and love offer us a great lens to reflect on the various ways these virtues continue to manifest themselves within our community. While all these themes are equally important, there is one that I feel most compelled to reflect on at this time — JOY.
Joy is at the heart of everything we do as a community. It begins with our mission statement and the charge to educate boys in an atmosphere that is “moral, caring, and joyful” and becomes visible when you set foot on campus. From the thoughtful and meaningful activities taking place in our classrooms on a daily basis to the tremendous success of our athletic teams, our Theater Arts and Band performances, our Cereal Drive, our Christmas Toy Drive, and the many co-curricular clubs and activities that allow our Spartans to pursue their passion — the joy in our community is visible and palpable.

Our annual Toy Drive is happening now (through December 21), and we need your help! We hope to gather 2,000 toys by the Christmas holidays to distribute to various organizations around Contra Costa County and the Bay Area. This year, we are donating to four organizations: Bay Area Crisis Nursery, Oakland Catholic Worker, Running With Love, and the De La Salle Academy.
We are collecting unwrapped NEW toys for boys and girls, from infants to 13-year-olds. All donations can be dropped off before school, between 7:30 and 8 am, in front of the Hofmann Center. If you would like to make a monetary donation instead, click here.
Every student who makes a donation (either a toy or electronic payment) will be able to wear sweatpants during finals week.

The tradition continues! The Learning Center Staff would like to invite your student(s) to our annual Finals Prep Day on Sunday, December 17, from 1-6 pm. Breakout rooms will always be available for quiet study; tutors will help, and food will be offered. Students can email Mr. Jon Norfolk at norfolkj@dlshs.org with any questions.

Fall 2023 Union Magazine - Creating Spartans
|
|
|
You should have received your copy of the De La Salle 2023 Fall Union – Creating Spartans in the mail, but if you didn't receive it you can also check it out on the De La Salle website at www.dlshs.org/union.
The fall issue of the Union Magazine traditionally serves as an annual report for the previous school year. As such, you will find information about graduation and college choices for the class of 2023, as well as the school's annual Honor Roll of Donors. The issue also contains several feature articles: Creating Spartans: Over the Years, Through the Eyes of a Dean, Donor Stories, and a review of Bob Ladouceur's What is a Spartan? essay from the early 1990s. If you have any feedback you'd like to share with the editorial team, you can contact us at DLSCommunications@dlshs.org.
