Scripture Reflection

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11
Fall is a time of exciting transition for many people, but I find that change also tests my faith. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of God’s plan of hope and joy for us. I’ve tried to remember that over the summer as I completed my Masters in Teaching through UP’s PACE Program and began the Notre Dame ChACE program. For the past several weeks, I have been in Quito, Ecuador learning Spanish in preparation for teaching English in Chile next year.
It's during these times of transition when I feel my faith being tested in two ways. First, in this busy time I forget to spend intentional time with God. I consequently forget his goodness or feel like He is silent. Secondly, I miss the constant community of faith around me that I had in Portland. I’ve noticed that in the gaps between all the excitement and wonder of being in a new city, learning a new language, and meeting new people there lies uncertainty, frustration, and isolation.
Luckily, the support from my host family grew to enrich my faith life after my host mom and I had a conversation about being Christian. Despite the language barrier, we talked about what kind of church each of us goes to and how God has worked in our lives. Now we fill our once silent breakfasts with worship music in English and Spanish. While we don’t completely understand all the words, the message is evident through the music. One song, “King of My Heart” or “Rey de Mi Corazon” states, “You are good… you’re never going to let me down."
These lyrics remind me that God is always looking out for us, is there to catch us when we are struggling, and sacrificed because He loves us so much. Additionally, listening to music with my host mom reminds me how important a faith community is. Whether you’re talking or just sitting in each other’s company, having someone else to share your faith with is another reminder of God’s goodness and his love for you. He has “plans to give you hope and a future.” As you continue to walk in your faith, remember God’s love for you and that we were made to walk in faith together.

"The Best Soccer Player in the World" by Brian Doyle
"Sat at a rickety table the other night, behind the looming south wall of Merlo Field, on which there is a fifteen-foot-high photograph of herself in her University of Portland jersey, and signed autographs for, by my count, two hundred children..."

Corners of Campus

One of the most recognizable places on campus is Donovan Peterson's sculpture of Christ the Teacher and his companions, which was dedicated to former University President Fr. Thomas Oddo, C.S.C. These statues, located between Mago Hunt and Franz Hall, reflect the University's Catholic foundation, it's commitment to teaching, and each person's unique path of spiritual searching.
We want to hear from you!
Now that students are back on The Bluff, we'd love to highlight the residence hall chapels in an upcoming issue. Click the link below to share how your faith was impacted by experiences in one of the chapels.

September 15: Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

From the mosaic in Christ theTeacher Chapel
September 15 is the feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows, the patroness of the Congregation of Holy Cross, and also the anniversary of the beatification of Blessed Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross.
“There stood by the cross of Jesus his mother Mary, who knew grief and was a Lady of Sorrows. She is our special patroness, a woman who bore much she could not understand and who stood fast. To her many sons and daughters, whose devotions ought to bring them often to her side, she tells much of this daily cross and its daily hope.” (from the Congregation of Holy Cross Constitution)
