ECSD AI Guiding Principles and Agreements

As AI continues to play a significant role in education, our ECSD AI Think Tank has created a set of AI Guiding Principles to help keep our focus on what matters in education. We also created AI Student and Staff Agreements. Student Agreements have been added to the Student Technology Agreement that all families sign during registration as well as school handbooks. We hope these resources help guide and ground us as our journey in the world of AI continues to evolve!

KnowBe4 Annual Training

ECSD requires all employees to complete the 30 min KnowBe4 Cybersecurity Training annually. Please click on the link in the email you received from KnowBe4 this summer. You must complete your training by the end of October break to ensure that your ECSD account remains active.

As a follow-up to this training, KnowBe4 will send fake phishing emails to you throughout the year to test your ability to recognize phishing attempts. If you receive an email that you believe is a phishing email, please click on the orange fish hook icon at the top of your Gmail.

Auto-Rostered GoGuardian Classrooms

We can now auto-roster classrooms in GoGuardian Teacher! For secondary teachers, we have auto-rostered all classes. For elementary teachers, we have auto-rostered your homeroom class (elementary specials teachers will see all their classes). You can still create your own classrooms if you’d like, but these auto-rostered classrooms will update nightly with rosters in PowerSchool. To access your auto-rostered classrooms in GoGuardian Teacher, click on Classrooms, then Pending, then click Accept for each classroom. Access more detailed instructions here.
*NOTE: Teachers are unable to change the name of the classrooms. We realize that some longer course names prevent you from seeing the section number. In this case, we recommend that you add the period/section information to the description and change the tile color to easily identify each class.

Google Jamboard and Flip (Flipgrid) Are Going Away

We know, we know. It’s a sad day. Google is sunsetting Jamboard and Microsoft is sunsetting Flip (formerly Flipgrid).

Jamboard will change to view-only on October 1, 2024 and then will be shut down completely on Dec 31, 2024. We recommend trying out FigJam as an alternate platform. Learn more about migrating your Jamboard files into FigJam here.

Flip is currently in view-only mode and will completely shut down on September 20, 2024. There is no great alternative to Flip, but we are continuing to look into other platforms. For the time being, we recommend using Kami or Schoology Discussions to allow students to post videos that other students can access.

Google Student Profile Images

We have reverted all student profile images in Google Chrome back to the default image, which is simply a student’s first initial. Students will not have the ability to change this. Please submit a helpdesk ticket if you have questions or concerns.

Schoology Updates

Updated Look

The next time you open Schoology, you’ll notice a slightly different look with more modernized icons. There is no change to the organizational structure or function of Schoology. They have simply updated their icons. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to the EdTech Team.

Schoology Kiosk App

If you use the Schoology KIOSK app (a lockdown browser which students access BEFORE logging into a Chromebook), please read on…

There was a loophole in this app that allowed students to bypass our security filters. We have closed the loophole, but it has inadvertently blocked other aspects of the Schoology kiosk app. Anything that requires Google credentials (accessing Google Docs, using Log in with Google for a program, etc) will not be accessible. Materials such as Assessments, Discussions, and Pages still work as expected because there is no requirement to use Google credentials to access these materials. As an alternative, we recommend using GoGuardian Teacher to lockdown student browsers AFTER students sign into a Chromebook rather than using the kiosk app.
NOTE: The kiosk app is NOT the same as the Schoology app in Rapid Identity. If your students access Schoology from Rapid Identity, there is no impact and everything should function normally!

PowerSchool Questions

Why are there no classes in my gradebook?

If you are a new teacher (to the District or to your building) and do not see classes in your gradebook, please reach out to your school registrar. Once the registrar has assigned you to the appropriate sections in PowerSchool, this will update your PowerSchool account and gradebook and will sync to Schoology overnight.

Why do I still see classes from my previous school in PowerSchool?

If you have moved to a new school and still see your schedule from your previous school, it means the registrar at your previous school has not yet replaced you with the new teacher and your name is being used as a placeholder. You should see these disappearing as we get closer to the start of school.
