Pioneering Commercial Rides to Space |
For three decades, NASA launched American astronauts into orbit aboard its own spacecraft through the Space Shuttle Program. But when the program ended in 2011, the agency needed a safe, cost-effective alternative. Enter the Commercial Crew Program (CCP), where NASA sought out private companies like SpaceX and Boeing to develop spacecraft capable of ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

Georgia Tech PhD Student awarded Best Paper in the Crash Safety Category at the 2026 Vertical Flight Society Forum |
Ph.D. student Ghanendra K. Das, along with co-authors Professors Kai A. James and Graeme Kennedy, received the Best Paper Award in the Crash Safety technical session at the Vertical Flight Society's Forum 82, held May 5-7 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Their paper, Maximizing Plastic Work in Crashworthy Rotorcraft Structures Using Topology Optimization, was recognized for its outstanding contribution to the field of rotorcraft crash safety. The paper is also under consideration for the Alfred Gessow Best Paper Award, which honors the top overall paper presented at the forum.
Das has a second paper, Defect-Tolerant Topology Optimization of Aircraft Structures for Redundancy, that was selected as a finalist and he was invited to present in the AIAA Aviation 2026 MDO Student Paper Competition in San Diego.
Both papers are part of his PhD research on computational design of safer aerospace structures, particularly the newer class of Urban Air Mobility vehicles, with a focus on crashworthiness and damage tolerance.
