Searching for Citations: Ensuring Source Credibility |

| Recently, we’ve been getting questions about AI detection and source verification in student work. While we don’t have any tools to offer, we consulted with the Himmelfarb library, asked faculty at other schools, and did our own reading on the topic to come up with these tips:

- Require students to include the DOI or URL in their citation. AI Chatbots can do a convincing job of imitating sources, but a quick search of the DOI will confirm its authenticity.
- Ask students to include the first page of the journal article/book chapter/resource with their submissions.

Include a clear AI use policy in your assignment instructions. You may also ask students to submit a “process statement” describing the steps they took to complete the assignment and whether or how AI was used. Check out the MD program’s AI disclosure framework for an example.

Trust is crucial to creating a safe and supportive learning environment. AI detection and source verification should not be viewed as the end game, but rather one component of teaching in the new AI landscape. Redesigning assignments, changing the way grades are awarded, and having honest conversations with students about AI should also be part of the solution.

Peer Reviews for Blackboard Assignments (In Ultra) |

Are you aware that Blackboard Ultra courses let you assign students to review their peers’ work?
When you turn on Peer Reviews for any assignment, you only need to indicate how many reviews each student should conduct and set due dates for the assignment submission and peer review period.
After students submit their assignment they will see a button to conduct peer reviews. As long as the minimum peers have already submitted, they will be shown the set number of classmates’ submissions and can add written feedback. These reviews are shown to the reviewees only after the grades for the assignments are posted. Instructors can withhold any inappropriate peer reviews by clicking the Show/Hide icon.

At any point you can review all students’ statuses for the assignment and peer reviews on the Submission page for the assignment.
While this provides a convenient way to run peer reviews, be aware that Blackboard only supports a single grade and rubric for a student’s submission and peer reviews, so if desired you’ll need to plan your rubric or feedback to communicate to students your feedback on their assignments and their peer feedback.
