Brebeuf Jesuit: Developing and Empowering Servant Leaders

One way Brebeuf Jesuit strives to form its students into men and women for others is through service. As part of the education of the whole person, service allows students to learn about different cultures and engage in the community while reflecting on the human experience.

Brebeuf Jesuit hopes to engage students to not only volunteer as a student, but to continue to provide service in their communities beyond Brebeuf and share their passions of service work with others.

Over the next few weeks, InDepth will feature a student paired with a faculty/staff member. #BrebeufApprecation Student and Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Calyn Hadlock '16 and Mr. Tim Kelaghan, Math Teacher
What do you love most about Brebeuf Jesuit?
Calyn: Brebeuf is a place of opportunity. From its huge number of clubs and extracurricular activities to its dedicated and passionate teaching staff, Brebeuf far exceeds other schools in providing an open and creative environment for students to find what they are interested in and pursue it. Whatever your interest is, Brebeuf will help cultivate and further it.
A great example of this is the various independent study programs Brebeuf offers. I intend to major in political science next year, and this year I was given the opportunity to take an individual course with LC instructor, Mr. Keele, on Constitutional law. Students can also take courses in math, science, or history, should they wish to receive a more in-depth education on a certain topic.
From the moment I began attending Brebeuf, I have had so many doors opened for me. I now feel fully prepared to enter college and work towards my goals, confident in my abilities and prepared for any opportunity that comes my way.
Mr. Kelaghan: I love everything about Brebeuf. The faculty, staff, and administration have all been terrific in the twenty years that I have been here. I am grateful for my colleagues in the math department who have been very helpful and tremendously supportive. But, of course, it is the students that make Brebeuf the unique community that it is. Our students are intelligent, generous, caring, kind, multi-talented and funny. Not a day goes by that I am not entertained or find myself laughing with my students. Brebeuf students make it very easy to come to work every day.
What is something most people do not know about you?
Calyn: Grand Cayman is my second home. My family goes to a house on a remote part of the island for a few weeks once or twice a year and I've been going since I was eight years old and my brother was two; my parents first started going almost twenty years ago, when they were first married. I hope to one day have my own house on Grand Cayman and live on the island for part of the year. Not many people go to Cayman and I hope it stays that way. There is a purity there that can't be found anywhere else; the marine life is protected and it's exceedingly difficult to acquire a building permit so there's hardly any architecture on certain parts of the island. Cayman is representative of peace and clarity and I feel fortunate to have been exposed to it by my parents.
Mr. Kelaghan: I went to Europe on a school trip between my sophomore and junior year in high school. In Spain, outside Madrid, we went to a facility where they raised and trained bulls to eventually be used in bullfights (not something I approve of). We were given the opportunity to fight a baby bull. Imagine my surprise when the “baby bull” turned out to be 200 pounds with horns. The bull snorted and pawed at the dirt and then charged. The five-minute lesson I had received in bullfighting came in handy as at the last second I moved my cape and the bull went for the cape but its force knocked it completely out of my hands. I ran for the safety of the stands - happy my life as a bullfighter was over. It could have been worse; the next student was actually thrown by the bull. Obviously, these were the days before parental waivers were required.
If you were to describe Mr. Kelaghan to someone who has never met him, what would you say?
Calyn: Mr. Kelaghan is a total goofball. He has a rapping alter ego who goes by the name of "White Chocolate" and you can usually find him working on a math pun to put on a t-shirt or thinking of ways to prompose using a graphing calculator. Often, he'll write the wrong homework assignment on the board, giving the impression that our homework is much longer than it is (for example, saying we have to do problems 20-90 instead of 20-35). He'll wait for the shouts and complaints to start up before laughing and changing the assignment, undeterred by our collective groans at his terrible humor. Mr. Kelaghan is always ready for some good-natured fun, whether or not it's appreciated by his students.
On a more serious note, Mr. Kelaghan is a helper. He is a teacher who will try anything to get a student to understand. I can't tell you how many times I've sat in his office, listening to him explain a concept in three of four different ways, patiently waiting until I've fully grasped the concept. The other day, I heard him offer to come in on a Saturday afternoon to help a student with a difficult set of notes. Mr. Kelaghan is a teacher who cares and if his students' sky-high scores on the AP Calc exam each year are indicative of anything, his attitude works. Any student can do well in Mr. Kelaghan's class, no matter how much they struggle with math. Because, even though mathematics is not a "gift" as Mr. Kelaghan might try to convince you, having him as a teacher is.
If you were to describe Calyn to someone who has never met her, what would you say?
Mr. Kelaghan: I have taught Calyn for the past two years and she is such a hard worker. Her work ethic is one of the main reasons she has been so successful at Brebeuf and why she will continue to be successful in college and in her career. Calculus is not Calyn’s favorite subject (as she reminds me daily!) but this never affects her effort or attitude in class. Calyn is also very funny, has a unique sense of humor, and an extensive vocabulary that she tries to impress me with (and often succeeds). She makes me laugh every day - even when she rolls her eyes at all my jokes!

Monthly #BrebeufDrives for April and May

Thanks again to everyone in the Brebeuf Jesuit community for the overwhelming contributions to the Brebeuf Food Drive. This is great momentum as Brebeuf Jesuit transitions back into the monthly #BrebeufDrives.
This past February, Brebeuf Jesuit donated 119 coats, 112 hats, 64 pairs of gloves, 51 scarves, and 12 handmade knitted baby blankets to the Crisis Office. Prior to receiving these donations, the Crisis Office had almost completely run out of winter clothing - so the donations were very much needed.
Last Friday, April 15, Brebeuf Jesuit began collecting sunscreen, bug spray, granola bars and new or gently used drawstring bags to help the families served by the Crisis Office prepare for Summer. Please continue to bring donations to either the Main Lobby or the Gym Lobby and place items in the #BrebeufDrives collection boxes.

Artwork of Bennett Smith '16 and Jackie Sublett '17 to be Featured in the Cordell Gallery

The Brebeuf Jesuit Visual & Performing Arts Department and the Mothers Association are pleased to announce that two of Brebeuf Jesuit student artists, Bennett Smith ‘16 and Jackie Sublett ’17, currently have their work displayed in the Cordell Gallery.

As an artist, Bennett Smith ’16, talks about the inspiration for his work, saying that, “The geometric and biomorphic forms found throughout the black and white pieces are resemblant of Kandinsky and Miró, among others; ultimately, artists I connect with in space, color, and form.”

Jackie Sublett ’17, reflects on her background when talking about her digital photography prints, saying, “As my family background is Ukrainian, I learned the art form known as Pysanky as a child. This historical art form is based from creating designs with the use of beeswax pens and colored dyes to form detailed images on eggs.”

Both Bennett and Jackie’s work will be on display until Monday, May 2. A closing reception to be held that day during the 9:15 a.m. PRT.

Congratulations Bennett and Jackie!
