The Seton Hall College of Nursing Newsletter - Fall 2023 |
For those of you who do not know me, my name is Kristi Stinson, and I am the interim dean at the College of Nursing. I am also a proud Pirate Nurse as I earned my M.S.N. from the College in 2002 and my Ph.D. in 2013. I had very big “shoes to fill” stepping into the dean role after the departure of Dean Marie Foley. During her eight-year tenure as dean, Dr. Foley led the College of Nursing through many transformations and successes, including the move to the Interprofessional Health Science Campus in May 2018, the $3.6 million HRSA grant for our Mobile Health NP program, and consistent high NCLEX pass rates by our graduating nursing students, as well as the creation of multiple new graduate programs, including the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program which began in the Fall 2021. Marie is the consummate nurse leader and will be very missed at our CON.

We recently lost two pioneers at the College of Nursing — Drs. Judith Lothian and Maryann Scharf. Dr. Lothian started at the CON in 2000 and served a variety of roles, including graduate department chair and Faculty Senate chair. She passed away on September 11, 2023. Dr. Scharf began her career at Seton Hall in 1972. She served as director of the skills lab and simulation for many years and earned emeritus status upon her retirement in 2018. She passed away on November 26, 2023. They both were true servant leaders, dedicating themselves and their careers to educating future nurses.

The College of Nursing continues to move forward and provide our students with an excellent education and values-based curriculum. As you will read in this newsletter, you will learn about some of our recent accomplishments. This includes a second grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey (HFNJ) which allowed our nurse practitioner students the opportunity to engage in an innovative telehealth technology learning experience. Also, our undergraduate students continue with a curriculum infused with clinical judgment learning activities in preparation of the Next Generation (Next Gen) NCLEX examination.
|
Our faculty continue to achieve national and international recognitions for which we are very proud. Dr. Moira Kendra was nominated by her AHS colleagues and awarded the Helen Henry Excellence in Interprofessional Care Award at the recent Sigma Theta Tau International’s Biennial Convention. Dr. Katherine Hinic was awarded a Faculty Innovation Grant (FIG) by integrating digital literacy into her advanced pathophysiology course in the graduate department. Dr. Phyllis Hansell was elected vice-chairperson of New Jersey’s Catastrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund Commission.
|
I would like to wish all of you a wonderful and blessed holiday season. Keep in touch so we can celebrate your accomplishments with you, our True Blue Nurses!
