Plains Metropolitan District Hearing

On Nov. 3, a hearing was conducted in Jefferson County District Court as requested by the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District (KCRMD) in the matter of the Plains Metropolitan District. KCRMD had requested the hearing in an effort to compel the Plains Metropolitan District to construct recreational facilities for the Ken-Caryl Ranch community pursuant to its 1985 Service Plan. Following a day of testimony from both sides, Jefferson County District Court Judge Tamara Russell will review the evidence presented at the hearing and issue a ruling on the matter. There is no specific timetable when Judge Russell’s ruling will be made.

New Video Highlights the Utes and Colorow

“The Utes and Colorow” is the topic of the most recent video production of the Ken-Caryl Ranch Historical Society. It describes the life and culture of the Ute tribe in Colorado and, specifically, the presence and influence of the Ute chief, Colorow, who inhabited the Ken-Caryl Ranch region. The 9-minute video includes many vintage photographs of the Utes from the Denver Public Library's Western History Collection.

Feedback Needed on Massey Draw Canyon Trail

The Open Space Committee, Staff and Volunteer Trail Coordinators have created a Draft Plan to rehabilitate and restore the Massey Draw Canyon Trail. The goals of the plan are to increase the sustainability of the trail, better protect open space resources, reduce erosion, and increase user safety, while keeping the rugged character of the trail as a hiker-only trail. The work will include rock steps, drainage improvements and tread work to better define the trail. Many residents use this trail and are familiar with the large rock formations that the trail ascends about halfway up. The Open Space Committee would like input from residents regarding travel across these rocks. Should fixed anchors such as handholds, steps, cables or ladders be installed to aid travel across these rocks? Would you prefer to see the rock scramble section left unchanged? Please send your comments no later than Friday, Nov. 11 to Sean Warren at seanw@kcranch.org.

The Ken-Caryl Home Tour committee is looking for new leadership and committee members. The current committee has successfully produced three home tours over the last six years. With the help of generous sponsors and the community, this event generated $28,310 for charity. The committee has had a ball putting on the event, but it is time to pass the baton for the next Home Tour. This is an opportunity for you and a group of friends to take on the event and make it your own. The new committee can choose the timing, theme and beneficiary. The current committee is happy to act as mentors and volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, contact hometourkencaryl@gmail.com.
