This message has been distributed to all UT employees with Principal Investigator (PI) status, as well as all UT graduate students and postdocs.
Dear PI Colleagues, Graduate Students, and Postdocs,
Given the deteriorating conditions in and around Austin and on the UT Campus, including water and electricity disruption, it has been deemed unsafe to conduct research on campus at this time. All research operations must cease. Water supply on campus is insufficient to support research operations, as critical safety equipment like safety showers and eye washes have no water. Other critical equipment, such as fume hoods, aren’t functioning properly. For your safety, please stop all research on campus and exit lab spaces safely.
If you work with live animals, no new procedures may take place. Please look for a more detailed follow-up memo with instructions for ensuring animal welfare from Glen Otto, Animal Resources Center director, this afternoon.
Finally, if you are sheltering on campus, you may continue to do so if you are using your own personal office. However, it is not considered safe to shelter in a laboratory at this time, and doing so is not permitted. If you need campus resources because your own residence is not habitable, please contact your department chair or associate dean for research right away.
I will send another email when it’s safe to resume research on campus. Again, as with all things right now, we must prioritize everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
