UMKC - University of Missouri-Kansas City
March 30, 2020
Dear Student:

You are receiving this message because you are a student employee at UMKC. We know that while necessary for public health, the transition to online coursework and telework has been difficult for student workers across the nation.

For the remainder of the Spring 2020 Semester, we ask that you work with your supervisor to identify telework opportunities where possible. If telework is not feasible, you will be paid through the enhanced policies established by the university.

Student Employees in Graduate Titles
Graduate Assistant, Graduate Instructor, Graduate Research Assistant, Graduate Teaching Assistant

Students in these titles are paid monthly based on the contract signed at the beginning of the semester or academic year. It is presumed student workers in these titles are working with their supervisor to manage their telework. This pay will continue until the end of each individual contract.

Student Employees in Student Assistant Titles (which include student employees in the Federal Work Study Program)
Student Assistants (Clerical, CSM, Paraprofessional, Research, Teaching, Technical)

Students in these titles are paid hourly and individual workload is scheduled by their supervisor. At this point in time, processes have been identified to ensure student employees continue to receive pay. These processes are outlined below:
  • Student employees who are able to telework should report actual time worked following the regular time reporting procedures
  • Student employees who are available to work, but telework arrangements are not feasible, should enter hours using the time reporting code “CLT” (Biweekly Administrative Leave for COVID-19 – Non Benefit)
o  The total number of hours reported per day should not exceed their normal
    scheduled hours
o  Students should contact their supervisor if they are unsure of their normal
    scheduled hours
o  Students may have a mixture of hours actually worked and hours of

administrative pay
Undergraduate students who are In the Federal Work Study Program still have a maximum number of hours they can work. Once a student runs out of FWS funds, they can contact the Financial Aid Office to see if other options are available.
If your unit does not have options for telework, but you are available to assist in other units, please contact PRO Roos by emailing proroos@umkc.edu. Please include your name, student id number, department where you are currently employed, and your current supervisor. We will be working with units and available students to try and partner for those who are interested.
Questions concerning telework for students may be sent directly to Carla Wilson, wilsonca@umkc.edu, or Dea Marx, marxd@umkc.edu
If you have other general questions, please contact your supervisor.

Sincerely,

Carol A. Hintz
