ALUMNI SERVICE IN ACTION:
Fenwick's U.S. Freedom Fighter
Identity Cannot be Revealed
Fenwick’s "Friar Files" blog has reported on an “intelligence community alumnus [who] prays the Rosary every morning at 5 a.m.” This Friar spoke last semester with students at Fenwick, and the U.S. government has cleared the school to share some facts about this mystery person (just not his name):
  • He works for the National Counterterrorism Center/Office of the Director of National Intelligence in Washington, D.C.
  • For counterintelligence reasons, he steers clear of social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • He also has worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), as a strategic advisor, and before that for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

"The Power Locker Room" to Debut on Feb. 4
Fenwick on February 4 will dedicate The Power Locker Room, newly named for Dave Power, now in his 27th year at the helm of Frairs’ girls basketball. Power is Fenwick’s first and only girls’ basketball coach. He began leading Fenwick’s young women on the hardwood during the 1992-93 season, when the previously all-boys school went co-ed. A brief ceremony will precede the 7:00 p.m. game next Tuesday against highly ranked Evanston, which is coached by former Friars’ player Brittany Johnson ’05Read more.
Sophomore Explains Why Fenwick
Is Worth the 10-mile Commute
Jack heads out for his first day of sophomore year this past August. (His mom, Michelle, made him pose!)
By Jack Henrichs '22 (La Grange, IL)
On a warm spring day at the end of 7th grade, I received a text message from my mom: “We are going to Fenwick’s Open House tomorrow.” Why would I be going there? I live within walking distance between two high school campuses where ALL of my friends would attend.

I argued with my parents until it was pointless. We attended the Open House and, of course, they loved Fenwick. They mentioned strong academics, Catholic values, small class sizes. I don’t remember much about that night, but I did pass the entrance exam that fall. My life was ruined. Or so I thought.

Lessons for a Lifetime
Two-sport athlete: Steve Flanagan '68, shown scoring in game action, also played football at Fenwick.
Alumnus Mike Shields '67 reflects on the Friars’ improbable basketball championship 54 seasons ago:
I’ve traveled many ‘roads’ after leaving Fenwick, but I have never forgotten the lessons I learned as a member of the basketball team and particularly the 1966 team that won the Chicago Catholic League title that year – against significant odds.
We won the title in March of ’66; one of many championships won by Fenwick teams throughout its long history. But my own sense as a student of that history is that few of these teams had as amazing and improbable road to a title as we had, and it is that story that I’d like to share and use to reinforce the idea that, although the title was great, it was the ‘lessons learned’ along the way that were more lasting and more important.

FACULTY FOCUS: Health/PE Teacher
and Dean of Students Ray Moland '96
Dean/PE Teacher Moland now is in his sixth year back at Fenwick.
What is your educational background?

RM: Like many other faculty here, I am also a Fenwick Friar. I graduated in 1996. I then attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, where I received my bachelor’s in elementary education. After teaching for a few years, I continued my education at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, where I completed two master’s degrees. I received a M.A. in teaching and learning with an emphasis in differentiated instruction; and a master’s in educational leadership with my principal’s endorsement. I then decided to continue my education at Aurora University, where I began my doctoral studies. This is where I am currently. I have decided that I don’t currently want to pursue being a superintendent, so my dissertation process is on hold. I am currently researching to finish my doctorate with a different concentration that will focus more on educational consulting and school board development.

What did you do prior to coming back to Fenwick?

RM: Before Fenwick, my experience consisted of many different roles in the public school system. I have done everything from teaching elementary and middle school to being a dean of students/academic advisor, and an assistant principal – all at the elementary/middle school levels. I have run mentoring programs, student development programs, after-school tutoring services and been an assistant and head coach of basketball, track, wrestling and softball.

Every day of class would be filled with laughter, and though I would stress out sometimes (those tests were ... maaaaan) she was always willing to help at any point. Sometimes, I would go to the library just to talk to her and get some wisdom. She treated everyone with respect and valued us as human beings. Also, she’s hilarious, so that’s a nice touch.

She also knew how to make class and learning so enjoyable. I looked forward to going to her class every day and her waves in the hall as she always asked how I was doing. Read more.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Friars' wrestler Matt Zuber '20 (St. Cletus, La Grange), who finished second in the Chicago Catholic League conference tournament in the 160-lb. weight class -- after fighting through a knee injury earlier in his senior season. "Zuber is such a hard-working kid," praises Head Coach Seth Gamino '01. "He placed 7th at the Dvorak tournament, which is the hardest tournament in the state. His record has been 11-3 [since returning to action], and he has gone undefeated in all our dual meets."

Zuber also is a three-time regional champion, Gamino points out, a three-time sectional qualifier, and a back-to-back state qualifier. "He's looking for his 3rd and bringing home some hardware for the Friars!" says his hopeful coach. Zuber is team captain for the second consecutive year. Matt, who also ran cross country and has played baseball for Fenwick, is headed to the grappling mat at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb next school year!
