Apple Festival

The UBC Apple Festival is back, celebrating one of BC's favourite fruits! This family-friendly event offers learning about the diversity of apples to tasting rare and unusual varieties. The Apple Festival is a great opportunity to discover more about this delicious fruit.

Organized by the Friends of the Garden, this event is a fundraiser that directly supports education, research, and conservation at the UBC Botanical Garden.

Tickets will go live at 12 p.m. on September 11th, 2024. Don’t miss out—grab your Tasting Tent ticket before it sells out!

This month, we are featuring a number of unusual deciduous trees from the Botanical Garden’s collections. One of them is Nothofagus antarctica (Antarctic beech), which is native to southern Chile and can be found at the highest point of the E. H. Lohbrunner Alpine Garden in the South American Section. It is one of the few deciduous trees in the Southern Hemisphere that we grow. In fact, it is probably the only one.

In conjunction with the Alpine Garden Club of BC Fall Sale, join us for this once-a-year opportunity to acquire uncommon bulbs and alpine plants and seek expert advice.

Blueberry Article for The Canadian Encyclopaedia

Our staff Lauren Jackson, Douglas Justice and Tara Moreau recently wrote an article on blueberries for The Canadian Encyclopedia. Did you know that “[studies] have shown that they are one of the richest sources of antioxidants of any fresh fruit or vegetable. Blueberries also contain anthocyanins (“antho” means flowering plant, and “cyanin” means blue), which are what give blueberries their blue colour.
