'49er Friars Pass the Torch!
Dr. Gene McEnery (from left) and his Class of 1949 classmates -- Bob Lee, Dick Enderle (with trophy), Ken Geiger, Dick Schutter and Tom Morsch -- pose with Fr. Richard Peddicord, O.P.  the evening of September 21st.
Despite 93-degree heat last month, the 7th annual "Pass the Torch" Golf Outing
raised more than $200,000 for Fenwick High School students!
In a searing heatwave of comaraderie, Friar Nation came together on September 21st to help support the school we all love! Our '49ers from the Class of 1949 were among the record 126 golfers who teed off at Oak Park Country Club. Thanks to all of these gentlemen -- and especially to our honoree, Dr. Gene McEnery -- for their inspiring devotion to each other and to FHS.
"The paddle-raise segment alone took in $80,ooo," reported Mark Laudadio '84. "The Friars almost fried out there, but in the end we crushed it! It's as if the excessive heat ignited the flame of giving. We definitely passed the torch yesterday." Funds will be used to enhance Fenwick's new Digital Collaboration Room, a collaborative work space adjacent to the John Gearen '32 Library.
"In 2018, Pass the Torch will surpass the $1 million mark, which is an awesome feat over eight years," Ladaudio concluded. To everyone who played, sponsored and helped make the 2017 event a success, a heartfelt THANK YOU!

Friar Nation Donates $10K for Hurricane Relief
On Fenwick's 88th anniversary weekend, the Fenwick community raised nearly $10,000 to help Houston Dominican Sister schools with Hurricane Harvey relief. Thanks, Friar Nation!
Homecoming & Reunion Weekend
More than 500 Friars returned to Oak Park, River Grove (for the football game, of course!), Forest Park, Riverside, Lisle and Chicago during the weekend of September 29th - October 1st. Reunion events were held for the classes ending in 2 or 7 with alumni from the classes of 1942 through 2012 attending. The Madison Street strip, west of Harlem Ave., was hopping Friday and Saturday nights, with festivities at familiar haunts such as Doc Ryan's, Healy's, Jimmy's Place, O'Sullivans and Skrine Chops. Fenwick alumni from multiple graduation years attended golf outings, pregame tailgates, postgame parties, a prayer service, a luncheon, a private pool party and family day on Sunday at the Morton Arboretum. Whew!
Faculty Focus – Samantha Carraher '96
Alumna Ms. Samantha Carraher '96 is in her 18th year teaching Spanish at Fenwick.
What is your educational background?
SC: After finishing my elementary education at St. Giles in Oak Park, I had the honor of attending Fenwick as part of the first class of girls in school history. When I graduated from Fenwick, I went to the University of Dayton, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in Spanish. I also have my master’s degree in Teacher Leadership from Elmhurst College, and had the opportunity to study in Spain (Segovia and Madrid) on two separate occasions.
What did you do prior to becoming a teacher at Fenwick?
SC: I actually began teaching at Fenwick immediately after graduating from Dayton in 2000.
What are you currently reading for enjoyment?
SC: After seeing "Hamilton," I decided to read the biography about the title character to learn more about him and the impact he had on our nation’s development following the Revolutionary War.
What interests do you pursue outside of the classroom?
SC: I am an avid fan of the men’s basketball team from Dayton and the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs. (I'm pretty sure I heard an exasperated groan coming from the direction of Mr. Arellano’s classroom before I even put the period on that last sentence!) I also love gardening and musical theater. My husband and I have tried to get into a variety of shows on cable and Netflix. However, with a two-year-old at home, our television viewing consists primarily of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Doc McStuffins" and "Peppa Pig."
To what teams and/or clubs did you belong as a student?
SC: I played volleyball and basketball during my first two years at Fenwick, and Coach Power is still trying to recover from the experience. I was a member of Fenwick’s varsity softball team for four years and played for a traveling softball organization called the Windmills. I was also in the cast of the spring musical my sophomore year.
Collegiate Friars:

Name: Jimmy Harrington
Fenwick Graduation: 2015
Hometown: River Forest
Grade school: St. Luke
Current school: The Catholic University of America (Washington, D.C.)
Current major: Economics
Career aspirations: To work in political consulting when I graduate and, eventually, go to law school.
Fenwick achievements/activities: Faculty Honor Award in Broadcasting; participated in Broadcasting Club, Friar Mentors, Kairos Leader, Soccer and Track.
Teacher who had the most influence on you: I cannot say enough about how much Ms. Logas impacted me. Her knowledge, passion, and devotion made her classes the highlight of my time at Fenwick. Her lessons on U.S. History and Government stay with me to this day, but more important were the daily lessons she taught on the importance of respect and civility. In addition to Ms. Logas so many faculty members went out of their way to take a special interest in me, especially Mr. O'Connor, Mr. Schoeph, Mr. Roche, Fr. Peddicord, Fr. LaPata, Mrs. Nowicki and Br. Byrd.
Class that had the most influence on you: AP American Government with Ms. Logas.
Best Fenwick experience/the one you would like to live again: Broadcasting the Fenwick Friars' football victory over the Bishop Lynch Friars in Dallas my junior year.
Fenwick experience that changed you the most: The forging of long-term friendships that occurred at Fenwick had the most profound impact on me. My best friends from Fenwick continuously challenge me to be a better person while grounding me to my roots.
Opportunities at Fenwick you wish you would have explored more: I wish I would have gotten involved on the Debate Team.
Let Fenwick Know!
The Communications Staff needs your help. We are researching two potential story ideas for future editions of the Friar Reporter alumni magazine:
  1.  Have you written a book, or do you know a FHS classmate who is a published author?

  2. Are you part of a Fenwick multi-generational family -- grandparent, parent and child who all have graduated from FHS?
