Growing Community: New Rabbinical Students Take Part in Annual Shannie Lightman Goldstein Shabbaton
As we emerge from the holiday season, our new rabbinical students are hitting their stride as Hebrew College shifts into its regular rhythms. Joining us on campus from all across the United States (and England), these sixteen future rabbis have worked as farmers and environmental organizers, Jewish educators and communal workers, financial planners and small business owners, artists, performers, and musicians. We are excited for their life and work experiences to infuse our community before they emerge into the wider Jewish world to write their own rabbinic job descriptions.

The idea of task, or purpose, animates me, as it does nearly all of us. What is my task in life? How do I know that it is my task? It is commonly understood in our tradition that our patriarch Abraham’s task was to shepherd monotheism into the world: he was the first believer in a singular god, and a steadfast one. The biggest expression of that faith was his most famous test: the binding of Isaac, the akeda. There is purpose and there are ordeals, or in biblical language, tests. If we accept the biblical framework, then my question is: does our task in life have anything to do with our tests?

Hebrew College Celebrates Book Release with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl
On October 21, Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld joined Rabbi Angela Buchdahl at the Streicker Center in NYC for a special event about her new memoir and spiritual guide, Heart of a Stranger. The event featured a discussion with Rabbi Buchdahl and comedian Stephen Colbert, followed by a conversation with Rabbi Buchdahl and President Anisfeld, Angela's mother Sulja Yi Warnick, and URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs, all of whom have shaped, and continue to shape, her life. (Above clockwise: President Anisfeld, Sulja Yi Warnick, Rabbi Buchdahl; Stephen Colbert and Rabbi Buchdahl; President Ansifeld. Photos courtesy of The Streiker Center.)
Rabbi Buchdahl’s tour also stopped at Hebrew College's shared campus on October 26 with nearly 400 people in attendance. The rabbi was joined in conversation by longtime friend and The Jewish Women’s Archive CEO Dr. Judith Rosenbaum. Together, they discussed themes and events from the memoir, including the power of music, gender and ambition in the workplace, leading institutions during the MeToo movement, and the early childhood memories of her Korean mother’s Buddhism shaping her understanding of Jewish spirituality. JWA, a shared campus partner, co-hosted this event.
