Timed with Earth Month, we check in with Tufts Office of Sustainability

Established in 2006, the Office of Sustainability works to harness Tufts’ potential to be a model of just sustainability by linking institutional challenges with education and research. Under the guidance of Dano Weisbord, who joined in October 2022 as its first chief sustainability officer and executive director, the team is reenvisioning how to bridge learning and research with operational challenges so students can learn to be resilient problem-solvers and work with faculty to create scalable solutions.
In a recent progress report, Weisbord emphasized “The most exciting aspect of sustainability in higher education is when academic work—be it policy, economics, art, or science—feeds and informs our efforts to make Tufts better and our operational challenges help form questions and lines of inquiry for academic work.”
Jennifer Reilly, the team’s communications specialist, highlights a strong, paid internship program for students to get involved in sustainability on campus and a new SustainableCORE Fellows program. Launching in Fall 2023, the fellows program offers year-long positions for students to foster a culture of sustainability and engage in community building that underscores equity, justice, action, and celebration (applications are due Tuesday, April 25).
The Office of Sustainability also hosts a variety of events year-round. Thinking about your student’s move out day? Starting Friday, May 5, the sustainability team is partnering with Tufts Facilities to offer donations and recycling locations around campus where students can drop off dorm items, including books, decor, clothing, and bedding.
If your student is interested in sustainability, Reilly says “There are lots of opportunities to get involved!” Students can email sustainabilityoffice@tufts.edu or stop by the office, located at Barnum Hall (moving this summer to Bromfield-Pearson).

Career Corner: Career Coaching Your Student

Students receive advice from many places: professors, advisors, peers, and of course, parents. Research indicates that parents can positively influence the career decisions of their students. To ensure they get the maximum benefit from your coaching, consider the following questions:
  • Do I objectively guide my student in reflecting on skills, interests, career competencies, and abilities?
  • Do I allow my student the freedom to explore career paths and engage in new experiences?
  • Am I positive and supportive when my student fails?
  • Do I encourage my student to assume responsibility for career decisions?
  • Do I check in periodically to ask, “How can I be helpful?” and listen with openness and understanding?
