Back the Bend puts mission into motion across South Bend |
With a theme of “share your light,” this year’s Back the Bend brought nearly 500 students from Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s, and Holy Cross into neighborhoods and organizations across South Bend. The March 28 initiative supported 25 local nonprofits with projects ranging from neighborhood cleanups to hands-on work at sites like Dismas House and the Robinson Community Learning Center. This marks the 15th year for Back the Bend, led by Notre Dame's Student Government.

Notre Dame hosts third annual Trades Day |
Notre Dame welcomed more than 1,000 students from across the region for a day focused on connection, exploration, and careers in the skilled trades. The University’s Facilities Design and Operations team hosted the third annual BLDG Trades Day in partnership with the Michiana Area Construction Industry Advancement Fund, St. Joseph Valley Building Trades, and the South Bend Regional Chamber. The goal was simple: give students a chance to see what a career in the trades actually looks like. Students connected directly with contractors, union representatives, and trades professionals, asking questions and learning about different career paths.

Series connects Notre Dame, local community through storytelling |
Through the Letras Latinas series, Notre Dame is creating space for nationally recognized Latino authors to engage both students and the broader South Bend community. Events range from campus readings and class visits to public conversations hosted at the St. Joseph County Public Library, opening the door for deeper dialogue around identity, culture, and lived experience. This is the second installment of the series and plans are already in motion for next spring’s author.

Notre Dame faculty lead Catholic social tradition workshops in local parishes |
Through workshops hosted by the Institute for Social Concerns, Notre Dame faculty are partnering with local parishes to bring people together around real issues facing the community. The sessions focus on practical topics like poverty, immigration, and economic opportunity, creating space for thoughtful conversation and shared problem-solving. The workshop is the latest initiative to emerge from the Leadership Forum, a component of the institute’s South Bend Citizens Collaboratory.

Innovation takes center stage at IDEA Week, April 20–24 |
IDEA Week returns this April, transforming the South Bend–Elkhart region into a hub of energy, creativity, and connection. The weeklong festival brings together entrepreneurs, students, creatives, and community leaders for keynote talks, hands-on workshops, startup showcases, and community events designed to move ideas forward.
